Short story, I was driving down a trail, pulled over to take a picture of a porta-potty deer stand and when backing up clipped a post. I caused no damage to the post but it knocked my rear driver's side bumper and light cover off. My ABS light is now on as well even though I have tested the braking and it appears to working as it should.

Regarding the ABS I never turned the truck off after hitting the post. Getting it home and letting it sit for 30 minutes I turned it back on and drove it about 10 miles in the city and the light hasn't came back on, still that worries me. I also ran a bluetooth OBD2 sensor and it isn't reporting any issues either.

My question is, do you guys think this is worth reporting to insurance or just paying out of pocket? I had to raise my insurance to the $1000 deductible for reasons and I would have the cost of everything to come to $2000 knowing that I will pay it back over time when my insurance costs go up. Of course I know I need to take it to the dealership to get a quote.

    Thanks!

tl;dr Backed into a post and knocked off my rear driver's side light cover and bumper. Not sure if I should file insurance and pay $1000 deductible or pay out of pocket.

    I'd file that.

New bedside. New bumper cover. Possible ABS wire damage?

File it. Like DCSBFTMFW said, there could be more damage than the just visual aspect of it.

Well, to me, it would totally depend on the bill to repair. If it's $20,000 worth of damage, I'd file it. If it's $200 worth of damage, I'd pay out of pocket. Somewhere in between those two extremes is a tipping point from one to the other.

File it - if its your only accident in the last 3 years you probably wont take a hit on insurance. Whats your deductible?

$1000. Added my wife who was a new driver and they gouged the hell out of us. To make it remotely affordable for us we went from the $250 to the $1000.

ouch ... yeah new drivers always take a big hit. I would have just had insurance in your name. She'd be covered under your insurance as long as she doesn't drive the truck a lot. I.E. Get in more that one accident. Been there... that's what we did. Waited until my wife's license was 5 years old or more, insurance didn't even go up much at all when we got a 2nd (2016 Tacoma) truck.

Got a friend that has a repair shop??

File it. You're looking at probably around 6K in damages right there. This is what insurance is for!

That will be over $1,000 probably closer to $3000. At least it is a soft hit. Get a quote from the dealer and see what it will cost. Just remember most quotes over run. As your new driver predicament I would avoid filing a claim if I could. If it were me I would probably draw the line at 2 grand. But that is a decision you have to make. It depends on how old you are, past driving issues and how workable your insurance carrier is. Accidents happen man, Good luck with your Boo Boo.

I'd suck it up and file a claim. Buddy was rear ended with similar damage in his Ranger and it was nearly $10,000. Difference was his bed hit the cab on impact.

As stated, out of pocket is going to be more than you'd think with these new trucks. I was in an accident in January when a car pulled in front of me crossing 6 lanes of traffic and the repair bill was $7,100. Mostly new bumper + plastic stuff, headlight, side panel, hood, and some other stuff plus labor and paint. Not cheap. This doesn't look as bad, but it could still be up there.

I have an appointment for an estimate tomorrow at 9:30. I wonder how my insurance would deal with me asking them how it would affect my rates. I have an appointment for an estimate tomorrow at 9:30. I wonder how my insurance would deal with me asking them how it would affect my rates. I have been with them for almost 5 years without any issues. Since I haven't had to deal with anything like this before I am not sure if they will jack the rates at the slightest mention or not. It is MetLife.

Once you talk to your insurance you have reported an accident, The ball goes from your court to theirs. There is probably a time limit with your insurance on reporting accidents. Read your policy and make good decisions.

That is what I figured. If I get the estimate tomorrow it will be less than 24 hours. I also verified that the shop works with my insurance.

Maybe it was the lack of sleep I have had for reasons but I didn't see it. I have to double-check but it may have been right outside of the view of the camera.

I'm with ya man. In my 2nd gen, for some crazy reason I backed into my neighbors truck. Had a little love tap mark on the bumper but nothing too major.

This is definitely over $1000 worth of work, so I'd just go for the deductible.
