My girlfriends truck, a 98 4 cylinder, had some oil on the engine- maybe caused when I switched to synthetic. So I bought some degreaser and sprayed it on the engine block. I went ahead and rinsed the whole engine bay since it was dirty. I tried to start the truck afterwards, but it was dead. Tried again and it had a little juice, but didn't even attempt to turn over. I didn't realize I should check the fuses until now (I'm at work). Any thoughts? I've sprayed off my '05 many times with no issues.

sounds like a battery issue if you can not crank the engine over....try jump starting it....

How long did you wait to start it? After hosing off the engine, it's always best to wait at least a couple of hours to give the electrics a chance to dry off. It could just be a wet connection somewhere.

Did you cover the alternator before spraying it down?

Others can chime in but I know it's prudent to do so. Maybe that has something to do with your issue?

I once had starting issues when I washed my 2.7 4cyl engine bay. The spark plug wires got wet and not sending spark to the plugs. Remove the plug wires and dry them out.

    No dizzy on a '98.

Is it not turning over, or not starting?

No, its not turning over or even attempting too. I had planned to have it serviced (oil, spark plugs, and wires) today anyway. I had it towed to the garage so I will post the culprit later. Thanks for all the info.

Yes, "its okay", but then :angrygirl:...

So it ended up being a battery connection...seems weird, but its all good now. Except now the clutch squeaks :angrygirl::angrygirl::angrygirl::angrygirl:

I've made this mistake before. My buddy told me to simple green the engine and rinse it off before I did some wrenching.

My issues was that I got water down into the coil packs. Truck felt like it was running on two cylinders. Had to pull em out spray compressed air and follow it with contact cleaner and one more blast from the air compressor. Ran perfect after that. Hope that helps someone out in the future with a similar issue.
