Im a sens fan, and I gotta admit that was a huge hit. Pretty clean hit, only thing i would say is that its sorta predatory as hes not even trying to track the puck, but all in all I think its clean.

Body checking is all about playing the body and not the puck. That is the whole point of it. Dude, playing the body is lesson #1 as a defensman. Play the puck and you get burned. It only takes making that mistake once to learn the lesson. Do you think Stone will cross his opponents blue line with his head down next time?

Actually, they often teach players to look at their opponent and make a call on what to play now when on defence. At least that's what I've seen taught here at the high minor levels. If the opponent has his head down and you have the room to rub him out you should always play the body towards the outside. If the opponent is heads up and skating in the middle of the ice, match speed and attempt a poke check to force him to move to either side of the ice (ie make him make a move then rub him out). Either way you keep your speed and you don't get burned.

If you try desperately to play the puck or you try for the epic hit you often get burned because you lose your speed. The objective is to rub out the player and move the play to the corner. Keeping up to the forward, and the play, is key on the rush if you want to be a good defencemen.

Playing the body and going for the hit are two different things. Playing the puck against the skill of today's forwards is foolish as is anyone who teaches it

The point I was trying to make is that sometimes an feigned poke check can force a move allowing you to direct the body. It's all in how you look at it. :)
