Hello everyone!I have my system in and working but i feel if there is just someting missing,Im thinking it's the sub that is lacking somewhat.First let me tell you what my system has installed.
    1. pioneer avh-x5600bhs
    2. component set up front is the Focal 165 A1
    3. back doors is the Focal Access 165
    4.Soundstream PN4.520D
5.All nvx 4 gauge wiring and t-spec distro blocks
5.Nvx sound deadner for doors and rear cab
6.Fast foam rings for door speakers
    7.JL Audio JX500/1D
    8.JL Audio 10TW3-D4
9.Nvx fuse holder under hood and extra holder near amps 80 amp fuse
10.Box built by mr. marv with amp rack,I did have the hole cut bigger so the jl could fit.
11.Tuned amps with the DD-1 by steve meade
    12.stinger rca's Stinger SI4617 for 4 channel
    13.stinger rca'sSI4217 for mono amo
14.Ipod touch for my music,Plugged into glove box
15.going to upgrade to opima yellow top battery.

Don't get me wrong,I understnd it's just a 10" sub and it can only do so much,Im just not sure what to do for as tunning or if im missing someting else that could let my system bring out more bass....Should i add another jl sub like it or another type shallow mount?I have a friend that was going to give me a great deal on the kicker front row but im not sure how good it is...Sorry for the long read..lol! Im just trying to get some help..The highs seem to be great along the the doors..I think it's just a sub issue that is lacking.I do have the headunit set at 80 hertz for the sub and same on the amp.Thank u so much for any information!!!

    Nice system..

Since the system is already installed, I'd measure the system acoustically with a program like REW (http://www.roomeqwizard.com/) that would show you the dB vs. Hz. You can see the balance between the speakers and determine if it meets your expectations..

where did you buy your foam fast rings? thx

Kind of a shot in the dark here without being able to listen to it, but I'd suspect you may be asking more of the sub than it can handle. Output in a small sealed box will generally be lower than other enclosure types. Going with a ported enclosure (and driver to match) will give you more volume but also changes the characteristics of the sound.

You may be able to manipulate the signal electronically to give you more of what you want, but you didn't mention your listening preferences. Are you more of a rap/bass music type or more inclined to listen to rock, etc? I ask because I'm using a similar setup. I'm using a sealed Rex 8 with 170W but in an '03 x-cab so my interior is much smaller. If your sub is doing all that it can do in that configuration, I think I have a good idea what you're getting. Bass music in my setup sounds just fine as long as I don't ask it to attempt a hair trick. But it's easy to find hard bottom with this setup - and far before hair starts moving. It's right at home with 'real' music & will do almost anything I ask of it. But I still have to be careful in bass-heavy songs. Again, I'm thinking you're experiencing something similar. Hopefully I'm wrong, but it sounds like your desires are beyond the capabilities of the driver in this configuration.

Also, have you tried polyfil or some other type of stuffing? It made a profound difference in my application. I used it without any fill for a while so I could really tell the difference. I can find hard bottom more easily now, but it can bring in lower frequencies and increase SPL.

Here's a loose guide to what you might expect.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Edit: I feel I need to clarify the point about SPL. Adding stuffing may improve SPL in some places while lowering it in others. What I should have written is that your frequency response should be smoother. It can help fill in troughs in your curve, but in doing so can actually lower SPL in peaky portions. For me this effect is very desirable.

Can that jl be ported? The box was built for the pioneer shallow mount but i added the jl slim about 2 months ago...Would it be it'd not the right air space and it does not hit like it should?Would a port tuned right to the trick?

Aha! Yeah, that box might make the difference. There's a chance the enclosure is appropriate for the JL, but you didn't mention the volume. JL says .5 cubes for sealed and .6 cubes for ported - not including the port. So yeah, you can use a ported enclosure, but modifying this one with a port won't work. It appears to be on the small side. Should be easy enough to measure what you have & calculate interior volume. That will at least let you know where you stand and in which direction to proceed.

Crutchfield advised not to use low pass filter and bass boost in head unit and amp at same time .Either use headunit one or amp one . Try using only amp one .Simple check. Hope you sort things out.

Nice to see you have the bass boost off. Are you using the crossovers on both your head unit and amp? Looks that way, but can't see your crossover/bypass switch. If so, maybe you're really short around 80 Hz because of the redundant crossover. Maybe try using just one of them. My head unit crossovers seem to introduce noise, so I use the ones on the amp.

Another thing about that 80 Hz crossover point is that you're likely missing the areas between 80 Hz and where your mids pick up. If you look at the frequency response graph from Focal which you can find near the bottom of the page, you can see that this midrange driver drops off well above 100 Hz. In other words, you're likely 'missing' close to an entire octave of music in the midbass. I just mention this because you have installed some nice gear & it looks like you care about sound quality. FWIW, I have the same problem, but use my sub to fill the gap. It localizes the higher frequencies, but I'd prefer them to be behind me as opposed to not there at all.

Nothing I see in the settings seems like it would compromise the subwoofer though. If anything, you're sending more to it than anything else. Did you ever get a chance to measure the box dimensions?

Edit, I see that you mention in the first post that you're using both crossovers. Guess I missed that. Try turning one of them off & see what that does...just run full-range through which ever is easier to disable.

On that amp there is no crossover/bypass switch...........So what do you think the mids should be around as far as settings?Over 100 hz?I have them to low now?

You can just turn the subwoofer crossover point on the amp all the way up and let the head unit do the work. Or use the amp's crossover and turn it off on the head unit. Your call. Try both. They may use different slopes.

Yeah, I think the mids are crossed too low. They will have a different frequency response in your doors, but 80 Hz may still be too low. This is getting into something else, but a simple way to set the high pass is listen with the subwoofer disabled so that you're only hearing one set of speakers at a time. If they sound clean crossed at 80 Hz, then you're golden. If you get distortion there, try slowly turning up the crossover point until that goes away. That's a quick & dirty way, but it works. Then turn up your sub to match.

Err, disregard what I just wrote if you read that in time. I misplaced a parameter. You're right at .5 cubes. She's givin' ya all she's got captain. Maybe the crossover thing will help some? Polyfil?
