I kept looking at the wrecked truck, then your profile pic, then back to the truck. Glad to see it wasn't yours. And that a wreck is getting pulled out of the Puerco.

Have any of you guys ever re geared yourselves? How hard was it? I've done transmissions but never gears, wondering if I should give it a shot myself or just take it to a shop.

I've done my front diff but learned with my rear diff with the help of Silas, @Slodgetto, and Jim, @Ripcord, a few years back. Takes a lot of patience. If you've never done it plan on a day or two of working on it to get it right. If you're lucky and get the shims right, you could get it done in a few hours.

Sounds like a project, I'll give it a try next month probably. Any tips or tricks I should remember besides have patients?

I bought 3rds from ECGS and spent a day popping them in.

Big thing on gears is having the tools and the patience to set up the backlash. The FSM (at least my old 2003) had an extensive section on doing the setup. Would be good to find one for your truck and read through the section.

With fully built 3rd members it will take a full day just to remove and install the front and rear. With doing the gears, probably a full weekend.

Ive done a few ford 8.8 rears, its always helped to make a set of "test" bearings to set spacing. Magnetic base dial indicator is a must and in my past experience, I've always found it helpful to keep all the shims organized from the OE gears, they are usually pretty close to spec and only take minor adjustments. None of this may be helpful on a toyota rear though haha, just offering some tips.

Marlin Crawler sells complete 3rd's if you send in a core, this is most likely the route ill take.

LOTS of wiring, dual battery setup, Solar charging system, with some random lights spread around here and there.
Have patience. But also take measurements from the stock gears on backlash as well as the thickness on the shim stack. Give me a call if you need help. I did mine with the help of a friend. We regeared it and redid everything and got it closer than factory spec.

Magnetic base dial indicator for setting up backlash and a torque wrench that goes from 0 to about 5 inch pounds for insuring that the preload is correct. Neither my friend nor I had one and I was not about to spend 200+ to get my own. So check around in town to try to find one to rent. I know that the O-Riley's that I called didn't have them. Check the Advanced Auto Parts, or NAPA.

I appreciate the help guys, I should probably do it sooner but won't have enough time to put the truck down for 2 days in a row. hopefully I don't break something in the mean time

Well I guess it's time to tear down my engine again. Got white smoke but might end up being a cracked head. Found tiny cracks while I was doing a valve job. Ran it for as long as I could.
Could be time to upgrade my 3RZ. 2JZ engine for twice the price of a head. Would be more work but worth it

Hate to sound like an ass, Chris, but I could take it off your hands for free with the intention of cutting it up for scraps I can use in other projects... ie the bent sections of tubing and the tie downs, etc.

If it's still sitting there next week let me know.

Nick you are welcome to it whenever. There are some nice tabs on here and some other stuff you could scrap from it for sure. I need space ASAP for my plasma table so the sooner the better!
