Manual transmission Fan Club and BS thread (All Generations Welcome)

OK thanks. I was unsure if it had to do with possibly losing traction on icy roads. I don't have icy roads where I live but I don't want to develop a bad habit while I'm learning to really drive a manual.

 

If it's really slick you don't want to shift in a turn. I've been on a road so slick (ice with water running over it) I couldn't downshift going in a straight line. I was thinking of normal conditions. If it was real slick I'd just go more slowly through the turn.

That's easy, get rid of the equipment you have and buy the equipment you want.

Not that easy

 

My truck has 63k for $6k. I couldn't say no lol.

But, there's a guy in the city I work in who has a 1st gen v6 4wd 5 speed, I'm trying to convince him he doesn't need it anymore lol

 

Tell him only weirdos drive manuals.

 

I tested auto tacoma before and i felt the lag on it, its not as responsive as my old 05 v6 escape. Then i tried the manual its more responsive when i press the accelerator, the only problem is the shifting is not that smooth as a car and the gear spacing its to close to one another. Nevertheless i love driving m/t more fun, keeps me awake and i feel the speed when driving in highways.

 

Anyone of you guys tried skipping gears like, 1-2-4 from stop. I find it easier and faster as long as you control the right rpm and clutch. Does it hurt the transmission? I does it without a load

 

Im not a pro with regarsds to M/T but what i do is:

1 Dont release the clutch too early let it bite a bit and control the rpm. I notice this when i shift from 4th to 5th gear. Its different from a car that you can release the clutch as soon as you change gears.

2 anticipate your speed and choose the right gear before doing a turn, It's a bad habit shifting on higher gears during turns especially in winter or slippery roads you might loose your traction. Cosmicfire is right

 

Skipping gears definitely isn't good for the syncros. The greater the difference between input and layshaft speed the harder it is on the syncros. That said, I will skip fifth occasionally on the way to sixth, but I still row fifth in neutral to slow the input shaft. When slowing down I hit every gear, sometimes in neutral, all the way down to keep the input sped up for lower gears, unless I know for sure I'll be stopping (the difference between a stale red and an actual stop sign). The only time I skip gears and don't row them in neutral is when making a quick pass, say dropping from sixth to third. Then I will quickly double clutch to spin up the input as I shift. Learned to drive without syncros, it's a good way to drill into a young man's (or woman's) head what a transmission doesn't like.

 

Yeah downshift skipping is not bad on transmission we does this all the time for as long as the speed is appropriate on the gears used. Yeah my concern is upshift skipping as we all know our gears are too close to one another so you keep on shifting, i guess thats the difference of a truck (more for towing) from a car(for speed). What do you mean by double clutch? I guess I need to stop upshift skipping then.

I have to say driving a M/T vehicle is a form ART we have our own ways and style

 

first gear is very short in these cars. don't be afraid of shifting at higher rpms, she's japanese she can take it.
when i first learned to drive stick i was shifting at very low rpm's so my dad told me i couldn't shift again until i hit 6k rpms. i was already in third in his 3 series and we were speeding on the highway and finally he was like "ok shift..."

 

Do you guys with the 6MT in the 3rd gen notice the throttle hang/overrun that was common in the 2nd gens?

 

that's pretty common in most modern cars to get emissions ratings

 

Yes that's what I've heard but I just wanted to see how it is in the new models.
