08 head unit dying

The head unit in my 08 double cab is on the way out.it has fits playing a cd and I'm looking into a replacement. What is a good unit for this?I've been out of car audio for a long time but I used to run Pioneer units.will go with a double din but any advice or places that have the best prices would be great thanks

 

My radio is f'd too. Picked up this Dual xr4120 NIB for $30 at Advance Auto. I hear for the $ it should be a lot better than what is in the truck. Been out of the loop forever as well. Good luck finding something.

 

I'm going to keep a double din to fill in the space,if I was going single din I might think about it

I've got this - looks and sounds pretty good. Way more features for sound tuning. Appradio is a joke though. More trouble than it is worth. I just stick to the bluetooth or standard usb connectivity.

 

hows it adapt over?you need to get the adapters to make the steering wheel controls work I'm sure but I read something about a adapter to run a aftermarket unit through the factory amp

 

Is your factory system standard or the JBL system?

 

I used to install and have high end stereo systems in my vehicle. Now that i'm older I don't quite give a shit about how insane my stereo setup is, so i went with an in-betweener (cheap but not CHEAP).

I'm still loyal to Rockford Fosgate so I switched out all my speakers for that, but head unit wise I went biggest bang for the buck.

I was going to do a double DIN but wanted bigger than a 7" so I went with a 10.1" SSL and love it.

I got my SSL deck for $125.00 and it works excellent. I was researching Amazon for cheap decks and I said "why not" to a brand I don't know.

It plays everything.

I have movies and music on a USB and it plays it perfect. It plays DVD'S, cd's, bluetooth for the phone , etc. I have a PS2 in the glove box that's hooked into it that works flawlessly with wireless controller too.

I thought it would stick up too far into my windshield but it doesn't.






So anyways, I've always loved Pioneer, JVC, Sony decks but money wise , these cheaper names have pretty good units. The one I had before this was a double DIN 7" DUAL and it lasted 7 years. I've had this one for 2 years and so far so good.

Just go with another OEM radio. Plug and play with no additional hassles, and they are cheap or even free.

Nice. The last thing I remember having was a Pioneer KP500 under dash cassette and Pyramid eq so clearly I don't have high expectations for my $30 DUAL XR4120.

Oh man....in High school, Radio Shack had the best VCR sized EQ with pretty little buttons and a pain in the ass to mount!!!!!

Go to Crutchfield and enter your vehcile model, year, etc. It will list all of the compatible head units, and the install kits you will need (wire harness, steering wheel control box). Then you can go find the stuff somewhere cheaper...
Sometimes you can get a complete system with all install parts cheaper on Crutchfield, but their head units tend to be a bit pricier than other stores.

 

I was just looking at that on there and found some decent ones,i do like pioneer so ill prob go that route,if I'm going ito it ill get better than a stocker for it

 

What exactly you need help with?

 

Trying to convince myself to rip into it and hope this under $200 entry level set up will sound good.

 

The radio is super easy to remove. 4 10 mm hex bolts behind the ac controlls. Yank it out. I got a metra kit on Amazon for like 20. Twas single din but they have double aswell. You need to moved the yellow clips over from factory dash kit to aftermarket kit. And for running the power wire i ran mine down drivers side frame rail and up the top of the cross member that goes right below the grommet below the plastic cubbies inside the truck. Drilled a hole in the rubber grommet and slipped wire through. You can get a entry level full wiring kit at walmart for 20 to 50 depending on level of wire guage. Just make sure it has all required wires.

 

I have to run a separate power wire? With the wiring kit it's not plug and play? Shit maybe I should just get another stock radio and call it a day. I hate screwing with electrical; especially if there isn't much to gain.

 

Well i mean to power the amp you need to run the power wire from the battery to the amp

Edit: your just doing a radio install? Or a mild system?
