This VVV Plugging in on 220v at home is what most do but if you are somewhere without, it can charge on 110 power, just takes longer.

The tesla supercharger stations are free to tesla car owners and take 15-20 minutes for a full charge from empty. Seems like a reasonable trade-off. They have free wifi too.

The closest one right now to Powell is on I-90 in Billings. So about ~100 miles away. The projected range on the model 3 is 215 miles but there are a lot of variables so YMMV.

 

Would i be able to drop a trailer there for the weekend and grab it on way back from wedding?

So, on a current production car? Model S? Be curious to see how old the article is. As you pentioned previously, tesla is always tweeking their software, this may be a common issue, or it maybe unique to that particular car. I've never heard of it before so maybe something that has been fixed through their updates.

 

Cold+battery=voltage drop

 

Car batteries do not discharge by 20% or more over night which is what loss of 40 miles of range represents. Besides, these cars do not use lead acid batteries so you can't make that comparison. They are lithium ion. They are totally computer managed.

To me this sounds like a computer monitoring issue. Think about it, when you are cruising, the computer is constantly monitoring a lot of factors related to power demand. If you are on the interstate cruising at 70 mph their is a certain level of constant load on the batteries, however, if you go into the mountains, up a steep grade, the demand/load changes significantly. How does the management systems know to adjust to give an accurate estimate of how many miles are remaining on the charge? It does it through algorithms designed to give an estimate. It is these algorithms that get tweeked through updates.

I would doubt very much the the lithium ion battery pack actually looses 20% of its capacity just from sitting over night. I am sure there is some loss because these cars never completely shut off, they always have some of their systems on which requires voltage and amps.
