I've never "packed out" for a car fire, actually never even heard that term...you're outside, you take a little feed, which I'd rather due than be seen wearing a mask at a car fire on facebook or youtube. Not being macho, but come on...its part of the job. Fireman inhale smoke from time to time, same as accountants get papercuts, and school teachers get lice or the flu from their students. That being said, they did somethings right, and somethings wrong.

Right off the bat, how bout looking at the smoke and approach upwind? AKA The passenger side. You gotta get the hood open asap, watch out for hydrolic pistons and airbags, and how bout taking the windows to search the vehicle? You never know who's inside. Could have been a 3rd Gen owner who ended it all due to the spreadsheet of issues he has with the Taco...

Has very little to do with smoke inhalation but everything to do with explosive exposure to flammable petroleum and magnesium products. You would rather get your face burned to hell than look bad on YouTube because you don't feel the need to wear your department policy requiring scba? I'm real curious what department you work for that feels it's ok you do this. Comparing fingercuts and lice to a hazardous and potentially deadly working environment is like wiping before you poop, makes no sense.

i wonder what this firefighter thinks now:

I didn't say I wouldn't wear my bunker gear, (which would protect me from thermal burns). I assumed "packed out" meant full SCBA?? Was that what you meant? If so I feel confident that I am gonna make it home from every car fire that I don't wear a mask at. I'm not sticking my face (and respiratory system) in or near anything, (use the reach of the stream).

As far as my department and what we do? I assure you it's a lot bigger and busier than yours. We worry about real fires.

Was there ever a LODD from a car fire? Cause I've never heard of one?

Has anyone here heard of another 3rd gen burning? I hope it's not inherent to the truck.

No face protection, let alone eye protection in case of a flare up. Asking for serious injuries the whole time.

I understand the desire to help your downed comrades, but never turn your back on the fire. They all stopped working the fire and let it continue burning without a second thought.

Long term damage from inhaling the toxic fumes can catch up to you over time. Toxic chemicals don't release unicorn facts and rainbows while they burn. They release more carcinogens, so sure you make it home today, but when you hang up your hard hat for the last time, what's your health going to be like?

Don't kid yourself a lot of these guys aren't paid firefighters. They are volunteers, and they know everything
