I'm looking to upgrade from the OEM TRD Off Road Wheels. According to an OEM equipment sales website, the OEM rims are 7" wide. Now, just about every new wheel I'm looking at is either 16x8" or 16x8.5". Obviously, in order to continue using my current tires, the wheel diameter must stay the same...

I looked into it, and my current tires have a sidewall-to-sidewall width of 265mm which is roughly 10.5". So, logically, the wider sidewall width would allow for the inner diameter of the tire to fit a rim that is 1.5" wider... However I figured I'd double check with all of you experienced modders before making any potential mistakes.

I looked into this when changing out my wheels, in my case BFG KO2 LT265/75R16/E. BFG recommended rim width range for this tire in this size is 7" to 8". Suggest you look up manufacturer specs for your tires and stick with what they say.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think to do that.

Tire rack has all the specs. That's where I found the specs on mine. For my factory Tire it could run on a rim up to 9" wide.

The wheels that I'm looking to get are 8.5" wide... According to tirerack and tiresize.com the width range of my 265/75R16 BFGoodrich All Terrain KO's is 7-8"... will that extra 0.5" actually be a problem? Or is that 7-8" range very strict?

I'm sure you can find someone on here who will tell you not to worry about it and that it'll be fine. My opinion would be to follow the manufacturer recommendation.

Are you sure? Usually the range is 7-9". If it is actually 8, then I would NOT do it. Plus Tire places probably wouldn't mount it.

Just double checked and you're right. I wouldn't mount on an 8.5 tire then. You'll probably be more prone to having it slip a bead (correct phrasing?) while aired down on a trail.

Just to give you an idea, my wheels are 7.5" wide and I've run that exact tire aired down to 13 psi on the dunes with no problems.

    Follow manufacturer specs.

Tires won't be warrantied outside of those parameters, anyway.

Shucks... Who knew half an inch would be the difference between $500 and $1700... I guess I'll just wait a while until my current tires are worn so I can replace wheels and tires together. :pout:

Suggest you select product by function. IE pick the tire type and size for how you use the truck 80% of the time. Not what you 'might' use it for or how it looks.

Then pick the appropriate wheel to work with the tire.

Interesting development!! I went to my local Discount Tire, where I plan to buy these troublemaker wheels, and when I asked one of the guys to double check the rim width range of my tires, he told me that they were rated from 6" rims all the way up to 9" ones! So now I'm left to wonder... Do I trust the Discount Tire sizing chart or do I trust the internet...?

The manufactuer website will give the wheel dimensions for a given tire size. Something like Minimum-optimum-maximum.

    Optimum is the goal.

Technically that's 'internet', but it's really the manufacturer catalog published online. Not just some random numbers.

PS. I've never seen a tire with a 3 inch spread of wheel recommendation. Sounds like salesman yak to me.
