Obviously you are not a trained mechanic on modern internal combustion engines. By your statement you will never be convinced that its nothing more than a conspiracy for the OEM to get more $$$ from you.

It IS a way to eek out better mileage (which isn't a bad thing). Toyota started specifying 0W20 in some engines after EPA changed its fuel consumption method to include more cold startups. Note this is with extensive testing. 2TR can use it. 1GR can be damaged if 0W20 is used repeatedly. 2GR-FKS being a newer design has been designed to operate with 0W20 from the beginning.

The VVTI-W relies on oil pressure to operate effectively. Very small passages and tight tolerances require the use of 0w-20.

If I didn't do several hundred miles of off roading, I would be far above the advertised mpg. See below

Absolutely, it's okay to question what you observe. I see no problem in that. It is a little funny that people are willing to defy what the manufacturer determined what is correct based on anecdotal evidence though. Did they want to get better MPG? Absolutely, they are required to do so. Did they use this oil to achieve those goals? Absolutely. Does it mean Toyota sacrificed reliability to achieve this goal? Really unlikely. Toyota has a pretty good idea on what they are doing. It's why we like their little truck.

If this were true, it would not work at all until the oil got up to operating temps even with 0w20. That is not the case. The 2TR-FE was originally speced for 5w30 and only changed to 0w20 eek out a bit more mpg. Unless someone can point to some tolerance that changed along with the oil spec I am going with 0w30 or 5w30 when warranty runs out.

I can tell you that manufacturers will do anything for mpg and emissions and damn the reliability.

You should use whatever you feel comfortable with. Worst case you drain the 30wt out and but 20wt back in. No biggie.

    Here's a viscosity range for a 2015 Mercedes 3.5. Quite a mix.

    Above 5 F......15W-30, 15W-40, 15W-50
    Above -4 F......10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 10W-60
    Above -13 F......5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50
    Above 23 F......20W-40, 20W-50
    All TEMPS......0W-30, 0W-40

My wife, mom and sister all have cars that use 0w20. Scion, Honda and Toyota. All of them have over 75k miles, and no hint of a problem.
They'll continue to get 0w20 at 10k mile intervals, just as the manual recommends.

It is not about OEMs getting more $$$ from me, it is about OEMs meeting emissions and mpg regulations (we have to sell 1/3 of tacomas with a tonneau cover to meet cafe for example). I will submit I am not an ASE certified mechanic, but I did work in the industry and the things I saw (admittedly not Toyota) were crazy. I will not recite the list entirely, but how about running a higher temp thermostat for emissions (head gaskets would fail like clockwork at 60-80k), reducing the thickness of a frame for weight savings for MPG (frame rust through now common), and, what has me keen on the 0w20 oil issue, is that the manufacturer I worked for changed the spec on the engine oil even though nothing in the engine changed.

The optimal settings for emissions and mpg are almost never coextensive with those for maximum reliability and durability.

So what will extend our engine lifetime? Heavier oil?

No just do proper maintenance. Change oil and filters on time, of course not lugging, overheating, or abuse when operating will be your first concern in order to gain longevity.

The 2TR FE runs fine with 5w30. I am running Pennzoil platinum 5w30 and still get 24mpg with 4x4. It's a practically tractor engine. I also run an oversized, XG 8A filter. The horror!

This is exactly what I do too, and agree on the tractor engine.

My previous vehicle, a '07 VW GTI, was spec'd for 5W-40 synthetic, with no contingencies for cold weather grade change. The turbo had very tiny oil passages feeding the bearings. I cant imagine that oil passages in the VVT system are smaller.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I understand you have to use 0/20 oil for correct oil flow through the VVT screens or it will retard the timing. I could be wrong though.

    The owner's manual states:
    --

While not always different after Toyota chances the spec/allowable oil to 0W20, the piston oil clearance for example between the 2015 Tacoma (5W30) and 2016 Tacoma (0W20):

2015 Tacoma 1GR-FE Piston Oil Clearance:
    0.060 to 0.102 mm (0.0031 to 0.0040 in.)

2016 Tacoma 2GR-FKS Piston Oil Clearance:
    0.008 to 0.05 mm (0.0003 to 0.0019 in.)

Change the fluids half of recommended intervals (manufacture says 10k for oil do 5k). Check all fluids frequently. Use the best stuff available (wont get started on that other than to say my engines are so clean inside that I have used royal purple to see oil on the dipstick). Realize there is no such thing as "lifetime" anything fluid. Buy a torque wrench. Learn to do things properly. Buy only the highest quality service items. Don't ignore problems. Stay active on forums to spot issues before they happen to you and prevent them. Probably with a Toyota this is all a waste of time and money but it makes me feel better. If you own a jag or Land Rover or lotus or Ferrari or

Somewhere down the list is ditch anything a manufacturer changed to get better emissions of mpg if you can and revert to the original optimal design. To me that means run 0w30 or 5w30 synthetic in the four banger. (On a related, but not relevant note, low rolling resistance tires should be illegal they are so unsafe in adverse weather).
Do you have the spec for the 4 cylinder? As I understand it, it was designed and originally speced for 5w30. If it changed when the oil recommendation changed I will eat my hat and use 0w20.
