Another roof rack question.

Please don't hit me up with the "Do a search" response. I've read a ton of roof rack threads and haven't found what I'm looking for.

I am wanting to remove my OEM roof rack, but want to have everything on-hand that I need to fill the holes. Have any of you done this yet? I know that I need to purchase the rubber trim strip that runs down the channel, but is there plugs or anything else that goes up there?

 

Im looking to buy one so if your interested in selling it hit me up! Id even throw in my rubber trim strips!

 

There are threaded inserts in the double cab roof to accept the bolts for the roof rack. On the trucks without a roof rack, the holes are covered with a sealing tape.

When you go to install the rack, you are instructed to cut a hole in the tape, so if you are going to remove the rack, you would need to seal those holes. Silicone would work for this.

Secondly, after removing the ditch trim strips, there is a clip on either side of the truck just behind the windshield that you are instructed to "break" off. If you were to re-install these rubber trim strips, you would need to attach the fronts with something so they don't blow off while drving. I believe some people on here just use a large glob of silicone to adhere the strip to the roof.

I added the roof rack to my truck so this is my observation.

Thanks, Marc. That's what I was looking for. Are the tabs metal, part of the roof or is it a plastic clip that can be replaced?

Bandit, the roof rack is just something that I would never use. I bought my truck used and didn't have much choice in how it was rigged. 4X4 Tacomas are few and far between in this area so I had to take what I could get.

Doc, I'll let you know. I haven't completely decided yet. If I pull the rack and there is cosmetic damage that may worsen over time (i.e. Rust) I will probably not mess with it.

 

I dont know this for fact but i wouldnt think that if its a factory rack there should be any damage underneath it. Maybe someone else can chime in and you may be able to pull it and look under it to see if there is any?

 

The clips are plastic and seem like they are just attached with some sort of adhesive, not completely sure.

I bought the rack off of a fellow Taco owner. He did not mention any damage to his roof after removal.

The dealer wants $140 for the two drip strips and four clips. I need Air Ride first.

If anyone has access to the bolt/screw pattern and could provide some measurements, that would be great. I plan to make some roof racks from wood and do some custom mounting jigs. Getting a head start on the project with the measurements would be really helpful.
