2018 Diesel

I thought there was a new diesel manufacturer. Cummings. lol

 

Keep throwing out diesel V8 numbers. Because I'm sure toyota will go with that engine in a Tacoma. . Those engines are also lucky to see 11-13 mpg in town and come in $$$ trucks.

 

my 3.5 doesn't do any better than 11-13 anyway

Seriously though none of my gas trucks get mileage that bad.

 

These are Toyota diesels with Yanmar stamps on them. The yanmar 8lv-370 was a possibility for a diesel tundra at some point and the inline 6 can be found in the Toyota Amazon in markets across the pond.

 

Wanting and properly owning a diesel can be extremely painful..

I am back working in a dealership instead of driving "Large Cars" ( $$$$$$ talks at my age ) and the American public still has NO IDEA on DIESEL's.....

My QL guys workload doubles every time a diesel J@@p or new 15@@ comes to them;the extras alone can add 20-30 minutes and we are now seeing failures because folks ignore CEL's or DEF fluid warnings/low fluid

Until these learning curves,disasters leave or lessen, why should TOYOTA jump into the USA market ??

Only plus right now is diesel is 5-10 cents cheaper in Naples, Florida than 87 octane gas..

 

I agree. They would be opening themselves up to headaches. Fuel economy is the only benefit to be gained on a truck not designed to pull more than 6,000lbs. I would love to drive one around for the novelty of it but the reality is I myself would never fork over the 45,000+ they would ask for one either.

 

Right but fuel economy is likely what the majority of people want today if they were to get a diesel. Most people aren't looking to tow a house. If the Taco ever got a diesel, I would reckon the MPG's are what would be advertised well beyond any power difference.

 

Yes. I think it's realistic they could achieve 30-35mpg. But they already have a huge sales success so to enter the us market with tier 4 emissions and the epa might be more trouble than it's worth. Even caterpillar no longer makes on highway engines due to the epa.

 

Which is why I'm surprised there isn't a hybrid Taco option. If the mileage was there with it, it could be a huge for Toyota.

 

Colorado diesel gets about 27 mpg. Expect toyota to get the same if they went that direction. Over 30 mpg average diesel is a pipe dream on these trucks with modern emissions standards.

18.8 Ford Super Duty all a round mileage in an 8300# 4 door loaded truck real figures it's some thing I have driven a good bit about the same as my Tacoma V6 but way too big for my use but great with 30,000# behind it.

 

As much as I would love a diesel Tacoma, after experiencing what VW did to get "compliant" on their diesels, I am fearful of how it would turn out. Even worse, can you imagine the bro'd-out, rollin' coal Tacomas that would sprout up?

 

You will not see "Coal rollin' " out of any modern diesel , hell it might even be a "white out" with the modern American refusing to maintain them ..... clogged Cat's , bottom ends giving up due to wash downed oil ( we have IDIOT lights for a reason ) and warranties being stretched by STUPIDITY

Its a shame you need to maintain them so much now though, diesel engines are very simple and should require very little maintenance, the EPA is what makes there so much maintenance now. My 06 Jetta TDI was amazing, you know before they became 50 state legal and still blew out some black some sometimes. All i had to do was change the oil every 10k, fuel filter ever 20k, engine air filter every 30 or 40k and the timing belt i think was at 80 or 100k. Hell the brakes on that car i didnt even change til 100k and could have went longer. Traded it in at 130k only because i didnt feel like spending the money to do the clutch and needed something better in the snow.
