@weldertaco what 4.88 gears did you end up going with? you use ECGS?

 

I did use them. Wasn't completely happy with their website due to it not being specific when I ordered. I had to order an extra part when the truck was in the shop to get the gears to work.

The gears are nitro with the Yukon pinions.

Well worth every penny after rolling on 35s and stock gears for 2 years lol

 

haha yeah i hear ya. now i gotta decide re gear and stick with 33s for a while or run 35s on stock gears for a while. what part did you have to order?

 

If you run 35s and stock gears, be ready to buy a new clutch about a year later if you crawl your rig. Takes some proper....finessing... To get the truck to crawl an incline with stock gears and 35s in 4lo lol.

And the truck will top out at 80mph on a flat road in 5th gear. That's at sea level for me with no mountains.

It will feel pretty sluggish but it'll move.


And it was some special cage that goes in the front diff. V6s don't need it but we do in our 4bangers to fit the gears in the front diff. I forgot the proper name for it.

 

If you can I would just do them assembled from ecgs. Install is pretty simple, pricing is great, and they have a solid warranty.

 

Also, I would stick with 33s unless you are 100% positive you want 35's in the future. I didn't think the jump from 32's to 35's was a that big of a difference. 4lo worked just fine for buzzing around mountains. Could have been worse.

What killed me was when wheeling. Stopped on a rock trying to crawl up a certain line without stalling the truck or burning the tires down lol. Can't wait to try out the 4.88s while wheeling

 

total cost of regear to run 35s or SC and 33s?

 

Total cost? It was $1,200 for the gears and $800 for install for me. Not sure how much it cost to order complete diff's from ECGS is.

I did not. @BabyTaco did. Transmission shops install gears daily and often have warranty on their installs. My buddy bought the diff's assembled as well and he said it was a PITA and said if he could do it again he'd just get a shop to install em. That's why I went the route I did.

Cost is about the same either way

But! If you buy the preassembled diff's and end up paying someone to install the diff's for you, you're gonna end up paying more than just paying a shop to install the
gears for you. The only way the preassembled diff's are worth it is if you install yourself.

The install isn't that difficult. The longest part for me was removing the damn cv's. It was my first time doing it so I was babying them. I had to drop the front diff a week later and I easily had it out in a hour or so by myself and back in the truck in another hour or so.

The shops here would not warranty their work plus I set up a GB with ECGS for the gears. I can't remember the final price but it was a pretty good deal.

 

Shitty shops lol. Shop I ended up going to say "we warranty our install. If the gears you bought fail due to the manufacturing process then its between you and the company. If it the gears fail because of the way we installed them, we will fix it 100%".

 

4.88s still don't crawl as well as youd think
