    Hey guys,
I too have the CPS issue. Truck left my girlfriend and I stranded deep down in Oregon (we are from Canada) on a road trip last week. 3 days wasted of our holidays, barely made it back home. They Replaced the CPS sensor after they finally got it to throw a code. Crank code keeps on popping up, doesn't run normal. 5500km's on the truck. Getting pretty pissed that I have to go back again..

Dealer says it is a known issue, but no fix. wish us luck. 2016 TRD sport manual

What do you mean it doesn't run normal?

Made it back to Canada, but the idle was off the whole time. Hunting around, tried to stall acouple of times. It threw a crank code again. going back in for a couple of days. Dealership knows it is an issue but no fix. Yet!

Mine took a week for the sensor to come in. The dealership acted like it was no big deal and parts just go bad sometimes... Have them also check the catalytic converter too! Mine went straight back with a bad converter from the sensor causing the engine to run too rich. And that's another week of waiting too! So have them check it. Mine runs fine now. But for how long I don't know...

Yeah. I got the sensor already replaced when we were down south. Thank god they had it in stock. Good to know about the convertor... We will see how it goes. Not stoked on this new truck

Just happened to me last Saturday. Driving down one of the busiest highways in Atlanta and my truck with ~5300 miles sputtered and died. Could barely get it pulled over to the "shoulder" without getting run over by semis. Thought it was the transmission at first cause it felt like it was hunting gears but the dealer says it's the sensor/harness. They were supposed to get a new one this morning but they claim whatever came in was the wrong part.

    Supposed to get it tomorrow.

    We'll see.

And I just got off the phone with them and now they say that the part is on "National backorder" and so they don't actually have a date to get it in.

    This is nuckin' futz.

I did let them know that their intention of giving me a corolla was not going to be sufficient, and supposedly they are going to let me have a comparable truck from the lot. I'm going there later this afternoon, so we'll see.

Anyone have any questions I should ask, or you want me to ask the GM and/or shop foreman?

Yes, please ask them to show you the old sensor and compare it to the new one they are installing. I want to know if they are different sensors! They sent mine back to Toyota before I could ask to have the old part. Or so they say. My guess is they used a cheap, generic equivalent when assembling the truck. But I wanna know for sure.

Well I picked my truck up yesterday. I thought they were going to let me know when the part came in so I could ask about looking at the old vs new, but they didn't. They said they replaced the sensor and harness, along with two parts of the catalytic converter since it ran rich for who knows how long. Total would have been +$2700 bucks if it wasn't under warranty.

Drives fine, just like it did, but now I'm a bit leery of it. That's what really cheeses me off, that my confidence in my brand new truck is shattered.

Oh well, everything does seem okay so fingers crossed. Good luck to anyone else with this issue.

Yea, my thoughts exactly too. I want to contact Toyota and ask about what sensor they initially put on the vehicle. My guess is that every single Tacoma will eventually end up in the shop getting that darn sensor replaced very soon and Toyota will be kicking themselves for cutting corners.

How much of the engine needs to be disassembled to replace crankshaft position sensor? Do they have to remove engine from truck? Hopefully just removing some pulleys on front of engine .

Dealers don't use generic parts on warranty claims. Parts are OEM from Toyota. Toyota may change a supplier or something but they aren't using a Napa equivalent or anything.

I'll be the first one to tell you the reasons I wouldn't buy a 3rd gen right now. Too many problems and a step backwards in my opinion...

At the same time, don't think that there was never a new 2nd gen towed...this was less than 6 months after I purchased my 2013.

There are going to be problems with any new vehicle, especially a new design, especially with an all new engine.

I had the same exact issue on Sunday and after the dealer said they couldn't find an issue, I broke down again on Wednesday. Took it to another dealer and according to them, I have a bad CPS. I too figured it was transmission related. Why would I be getting an overheated transmission fluid warning before the truck shutting down?

Same thing happened to me on Friday driving home in I5 from Seattle. Got stuck in traffic while on the way to the dealership due to acceleration being sluggish. I wasn't able to make it to the dealer before the car went into limp mode in the middle of the freeway and had to coast over to the shoulder.

Dealer called me this morning and said they had to replace the crank pulley system, however he obviously misspoke or just flat our lied since it's a CPS issue. They said the part would be delivered later this afternoon only to call me back this afternoon and say the part they received was not correct and now they shipping one from California which will arrive on Friday.

Anyone having issues after the dealer has "fixed" the problem?

Any one know how much the crank shafts position sensor costs? Seems like this is becoming a common failure.

I live and work in places where limp mode is not an option since at times I am 60+ miles from pavement, let alone cell phone service. I am thinking that I may need to carry a CSPS with me incase of failure to replace on the trail. Thoughts?

The 3rd gen left another person stranded on the road? There goes Toyota reliability.

Nevadabugle: if you had a CSPS with you, could you replace it ? I have had the same concern since I am off-road often with my truck. You will need to get it to pavement so a tow truck (preferably flat bed) can get it to a Dealer shop for warranty repair.
