I said BEFORE we wander off into politics. And nobody is picking people's feelings over survival.

Somewhere in the line of genes my brother received a dose of cranial rectosis and has been a anti-gun/big Gov't fool for many years an refuses to come into my house.

It's sad that someone who you grew up with and love dearly will retreat in such a way over an indifference.....

I am at school at UC Santa Barbara but I'm from LA and moving back in 6 months for work.

In Santa Barbara, I could easily get into the mountains in the National forest if I wanted to. You can get way north on fire roads and dirt that way. I would try to get home to my parents place though. That would be really hard without a vehicle.

Not to start an internet $hitstorm, care to discuss your logic here?

Sure, ARs have sheer volume, until you run out of loaded mags, but if it's not a showdown in the middle of the street (in other words, shooting from concealment) I don't think the autoloader would have that much of an advantage.

Either way, in a survival situation, I think single fire accurate shots are a much better idea than a non-aimed volume of fire.

Having a good stockpile at home is a big reason I started keeping a GHB in the truck. If worse comes to worst, I can walk home. Where I've got tons of stuff, and another vehicle. :bananadance:

No shitstorm necessary, I enjoy discussion. You brought up running out of loaded mags, I have 4 on my chest rig and another 2 on my belt. How much ammo can one carry for a non magazine fed weapon? Not that it can't be done, but I would want to have superior firepower or at least match what I'm facing. There's a reason cops don't carry revolvers and shotguns anymore, to match the likely threat at hand.

Mag fed weapons will be more effective, especially if it's against a group.

I am not going anywhere if I can help it as the home is the best place to be as you know it the best.....this is why I live out in the burbs in a very very small sub division and many of the neighbors are ready for the day this happens....

On the flip side of the coin, if you're facing off against enough people to require a full mag without a reload, odds are you wouldn't get through your full mag before one of them shot you. :notsure:

Part of why I like living in the country. I've only got 7 or 8 neighbors around me, and half of them are farmers.

You guys have some seriously different weather patterns out where you are. Tornadoes and snowstorms out here are unstoppable with firearms.

    Shrug.
I prefer to think of it as overestimating the opposition :D
    Keeps me cautious.

Psh. Clearly you've never faced off against a tornado with a fully-loaded tacticool AR

Can't you just lasso a tornado and ride it into the sunset? I saw a movie when I was a kid where Kurt Russell did that...

So should one not try to have every advantage possible? Or just curl up in a ball and give up?

And not trying to make myself sound like a bad ass or Rambo, etc, but I have 31 months deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, I assure you it's easy to go through ammo quickly without being shot, even at closer distance. Not every shot is necessarily a well aimed sniper shot, you also may expend some suppressing, breaking contact, etc.

Not at all, just that carrying 180 rounds (assuming 6 fully loaded 30-round mags) seems like unnecessary weight. The gear that I keep in my truck is based on traveling fast and light, with the aim of getting home in a hurry. Getting into a confrontation where I could theoretically burn through even half of 180 rounds goes against the goal of avoiding contact with large groups of people

    :notsure:

A chest rig with 4 mags is pretty light, and can be concealed under a shirt or jacket. You are correct in avoiding people when possible, but it's there if needed. Like a security blanket. ;)

Part of it depends on where you're at, too. Around here, avoiding people is pretty easy. Most areas are forested heavily enough that you can pass within 100 yards of somebody and they wouldn't know you're there if you walk quietly. And I'd be cutting cross country on a direct route, rather than following the roads. I've done the hike from my office to my house and going overland it's a solid 4 hour walk during the summer, around 5 during the winter (everything's slower on snowshoes, lol)
