I appreciate all the responses. I looked into Koa but kinda put it on the back burner so I'll do some more research. I just want the freedom of movement and don't wanna be tied down to the check ins and check outs. That's for sure something I won't have to worry about?

Got back from my first hammock camping trip last night at Havasupai. Don't think I ever want to carry my tent with me ever again after using the hammock.

Havasupai is the place that finally convinced me to buy a hammock. Looking at all those folks relaxing in their hammocks along havasu creek...

I always carry an ENO hammock to setup and relax in but this is the first time I slept in one. Yes, Havasupai is like hammock central. its an amazing place for a hammock.

Once you get off the ground, you'll never go back! I haven't tent slept in over 8 years!

Just upgraded both our hammock systems to AntiGravity Gear stuff and it is incredible!

Where along the way do you look to head north? I drove a big chunk of 40 when I move from LA to CA. Nice country.

Picked up a Coleman Sundome 4 Person Tent, Coleman Queen size Quickbed, and a Coleman Classic Propane Stove from Amazon last Thursday all for $99.56 shipped to my door.

I need to get some storage containers to store this stuff in so it is easy to load up and such for trips.

KOA sucks. It's basically a parking lot with 20 RV's around you

Eh.. tents are really only preferred by the traditionalists, and they're not camping in KOAs to begin with.

RVs and trailers are king and queen of modern camping, and single campers are overwhelmingly choosing to hammock instead of tent camp also..

    Mostly!

Yes I concur, KOA aren't great, they're just not my style.

As for hammocks being for singles, I disagree. Mr. and I are hammockers. I converted him. If trees are large enough, we only need two. Typically we use three and share one.

Not just for singles, I just meant a lot of solo campers are switching to hammocks over tenting, so even less people are using tents these days for recreational camping which KOA and similar places are setup for.

Tents are less popular than ever, at least in the 2 decades I've paid attention. At the same time, that industry is getting so much more advanced with the latest and greatest materials being used more often by more manufacturers.

Just a bunch of old crap
I just need to chime in and say that in some locations, tents are necessary. When there's just nowhere to hang a hammock, you gotta go old school. You can't always rely on having trees or boulders to tie off to.

I love hammock camping and prefer it over tents most of the time. There are just some locations that hammocks just can't physically be hung, or really bad weather can make hammocks tricky without packing extras like underquilts, larger tarps, etc., making your setup just as heavy as packing a light tent.
