Can to. Hammock lies on the ground just as well as it hangs from trees.

Even with my UQ, TQ, tarp, hammock, I'll always be lighter than any tent that I would carry.

Trees are needed, or creative use of surroundings. :D

I dunno, there are plenty of 2 lb tents out there.

My wife and I split a 4# tent and it works great for us. I can't get her to convert to hammocks yet, but I'm working on it.

Hammock still needs an underquilt and top quilt, or at least a light underquilt and sleeping bag. Add that to the hammock and the tarp, you're not far off from a lightweight tent setup.

She does love to lounge in one, but I always have to babysit and do all of the setups so I might as well just set up one tent and call it done. I get anal about hanging my hammock, and she just doesn't have the patience for it. If I want her to still go with me on trips, she needs ease of deployment.

Yeah I think I'm lighter than my buddy's hammock setup. Granted he doesn't have a UL setup (mostly ENO stuff), but since he's still using a pad, his UQ is just as heavy as my bag, and the tarp, hammock, ridgeline and accessories, etc, are heavier than my tent.

Hike in and out was fine. In is easy. I usually begin my hike in and out between the hours of 4-5am. This was my 3rd time hiking in and out. I am going again in July and will be hiking in but flying out since I plan to spend a full day getting to the Colorado river and back.
