U-joints Not lubed - reply from Toyota Care

This is a great reminder for all of use to grease our u-joints at every oil change.

 

Try DELO ep#2. In all my years I've found nothing better, and in 35 yrs. of wrenching I've tried many.

Yes Delo is Chevron. Delo is their top line of oil and grease.

 

Just crawled under mine to mark my fluid check/fill points before going to the dealer tomorrow on trans shittyness. Fun-fact. It's a '16 DCSBOR auto, 4x, non-tow pkg. Has zerks on the fwd driveshaft. Does Not have zerks on the main shaft at any point. Wtf Toyota.

 

The main shaft has the zerks on the ends of the cap, not the center like the front.

 

I had my beadie eyes and grubby fingers all over those things. No zerks. The fronts are on the flat face of the spider. The rears aren't there, aren't between any two bearing races, and aren't even on the shaft or yokes.

Edit. I went to look again. They were on top. Put that on the "dumb things overlooked" list. That said, I touched them and they're all spotless. As in, not greasy. Cause for concern.

^^^ That, I told my service mgr at Toyota to "WRITE IT DOWN" lube and oil change every 5K... make it so grasshopper.

To reply to the guy that said 10+ pumps was filling the hose... ummm I've lubed a u-joint or 2 in my day. Plus the hose didn't need to be re-filled after each joint was filled. All required 10+ pumps first one with the new lube took about 10-14 pumps same as the rest.

That and there's a priming procedure when loading a grease gun that gets done PRIOR to touching any u-joint zirk fitting. So the gun was primed a head of time. By "primed" I mean making sure there's grease coming out the pump so I'm not pumping air into the u-joint that would require me to loosen the caps and/or remove the u-joint to get the air out.

 

You do not need to take the joint apart to get the air out. Just pump it full, the air will come out.

 

Then again, the air in Philly could be a bit thicker than the air in St. Louis.
What a ridiculous thread that's now filling up with grease salesman pushing their favorite brand. Who knew there were so many grease barons?
I still prefer sweat from my female minions. Takes more effort than from the males but it's worth it. Gives my Tacoma a nicer smell going down the road.

 

.....could be the air between my ears not purging from the lube job my dealer gave me.

 

So what grease do we need to use? Moly, no moly? Lithium? Synthetic? I bought a grease gun but didn't know what grease to buy ...

An nlg#2 that meets the Spicer spec.
Lithium
Lithium with moly
Calcium sulphonate

I'm using mystik jt6 hi temp.
The only one I'll caution against is Lucas red n tacky; I believe that's a polyurea base.
