I will be there, really no excuse not to... I was within 5 miles of the dunes not an hour ago. The snow is probably down to 9k ft. The pass definitely wont he open. I saw a few campers headed to the dunes today. Planning on the campground there or the BLM one at Zapata?

There are tons of other activities you can do, just depends on how much driving you are into.

Also, last reliable, decently priced gas is walsenburg from the east. Fort Garland has a gas station, but is usually pretty pricey. Don't get gas in Blanca. There is a sweet general/liquor store in Blanca that is worth checking out called Red Rock.

There is another pass that will spit you out near villa grove... Hayden Pass I believe. I would bet there would be snow, and may not be passable. You could go up through Salida too.

I don't care where I camp... you tell me the best place, preferably with as little other campers as possible... I'm assuming it's far enough from the city to not have too much light pollution.

    So are you gonna camp?

There arent a ton of places to camp on that side of the valley, all of the Sangre de Christos south of Blanca peak are privately owned. Most of the recreation is on the west side, there are some sweet places to camp on that side but it is about an hour drive. That is also the best potential for wheeling.

If you don't want to camp at the park this is the closest option:
    Zapata Falls CG - http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/riogrande/recarea/?recid=74116
    Worlds worst road, seriously.

If you want to freedom camp the road up to Como Lake is another option, although the road it is also not what I would call pleasant. Just an aside anything on the east side of the valley there is potential for bears. They are probably asleep now though.

I will camp. 20 min from my house. haha

Well, My GF wants to see the dunes... so I will have to do that for sure. I'm fine with camping, then driving around to the wheeling... but where ever the best place to camp, lets camp there, then drive to wheeling. since like I said, for me, this is mostly about camping.

keep the Bear shit quite around the GF, don't need her freak'n out lol.

Side note, can you shoot out there anywhere? figure if wheeling doesn't turn out, I'll have my gun with me... might need to donate a couple 100 rounds into the mountain.

Don't think there's trees there to hang my hammock so I'll either be sleeping in the bed of the truck or bring a ground tent

    It's a short bed.

Can't find my ground tent so I *might* be out on this trip.

An air mattress won't work in my bed, I have a fridge slide mounted in my bed so it makes sleeping in the bed very hard and confined

Thanks for the offer I'll let you know by Thursday. I'll be bringing my pup and don't want to take the chance of her destroying someone's tent they lent me!

After I finish my black intake install I wan touch on this more. I think Zapata Falls would be best for *this* group. Trees, fewer people than the dunes.

Zapata has trees, also 2 trucks could be a good anchor... lol
