Mid Travel BS 2.0

@jberry813 , I have a first gen double cab with a small lift, no extra weight in the back pretty stock really except for the 10" lift blocks...but the ass end is riding a bit stiff and my girlfriend hates it because...well... she has super big boobs. I have 18 Rancho RS9000's ( just the rear axle ) so that really should be enough to smooth it out right ? I can't really afford any more shocks right now so I am thinking about re valving my shocks to soften up the ride a bit and get me by until I can afford to add more shocks.

Three questions :

1. Do you have 9 free weekends to help me ?
2. What shim stack would you recommend ?
3. Do you think I should keep my shock booties red or maybe go blue ?

2. Bump your compression up.
3. Go blue. All day 'er day.

I havent gotten them installed yet. Hoping to one if the next couple weekends. I am hoping they will clear my SCS SR8s. The research ive done says it should be good to go.

It looks like the other guys say it'll be all good.

Let me guess. You are running superbumps huh.

Yeah I sort of figured you did. No worries man. It happens to all of us, even me. As you know. Hahaha. You can't run that way if you have the superbumps, they are too soft and pliable to handle the entire weight if the front end coming down hard on it. You will bottom out every time and the truck will eat shit. I actually bottomed out hard on superbumps once, came down hard enough to allow the upper control arms to strike and dent the inner fenderwell sheetmetal and bend some of the radiator support and hood.

If you want to continue to run that way you will either have to switch back to the stock rubber stoppers or go air bumps. You will trash your spindles otherwise because they are being allowed to bend due to the sudden stop they are seeing from the balljoints or uniballs. By having a solid bump stop setup you are not allowing the control arms to be the travel limiting factor, rather, the bumps be your travel limiter and stopper.

 

or...or...OR.....space the superbumps properly to avoid that. Just shooting in the dark here.

More than enough. Like I said. They are too damn soft if you want to mob prerunner style.

 

I have no dog in this back and forth, but if the bump stop didn't stop it with enough clearance, how is that "enough"? If it's truly traveling too far, than it needs to spaced more. Doesn't really matter how soft the bump is. It's not there to give more travel.

 

Inertia doesn't care what is there to stop it if it's traveling fast enough and since the superbumps are too soft for that type of wheeling, they are allowing themselves to fully compress too quickly, spaced or not. They also do not allow the suspension to cycle back out quickly enough where as rubber has more of a bounce, and air bumps are a totally different animal compared to regular bumps.

 

If you're mashing that hard I would think the stockers would make it even worse. What's that saying, it's not the high speed that kills you, it's the sudden stop. Either way, I would say the shocks need some lovin if you're bottoming out that hard.

 

The stocks will make you bounce around, because there is little to no give to them when struck by the control arm.

They allow the rebound portion if the shocks to act immediately once they hit the arm where as the super bumps continues to allow progressive movement. Both up and down they don't have a "spring" effect to them like the rubber ones do, rather more of just a squishy pillow effect.

You will find the ballin on a budget LT guys run stocker bump stoppers in their setup because they would rather run those over super bumps. Rightfully so also. They know what's up. That being said, however, they are too cheap to splurge for hydro's so they stick to the latter.

 

Still don't see how a properly spaced super bump will not stop the suspension as designed. The plate doesn't magically flex. You can only compress to a certain level. Space it more if they compress more than stock. I am not buying what you're selling.

You guys can continue to use your superbumps and mob around at 50-60mph at Barstow and Pismo. Just don't cry to me when you bend your spindles and excessively bend your front end sheetmetal because of it. Serious.

After I changed out my superbumps, my bottom out, overextension of suspension issues went away. The issues never presented themselves in stock form either.

The spacers are simply an extension of the frame. I hope you guys understand that. They still do not do a thing to help with how soft the superbumps are both up and down.

 

In stock form my stock bumps had 1/4" dents in the lower arms lol

 

Did you flatten them is what you are trying to say? Or did you flatten the stock arms? Lmao.
