I have had my AT 2016 Tacoma for a few weeks now and over 1500 miles of mountain passes, stop-go urban and about 150 miles of dirt. The AT doesn't hunt any more or less than any other late model automatic, IMO. It shifts up and down to provide the requested power or expected fuel economy. It shifts a bit more than the 4 speed auto in my old 3.4V6 truck, and though I haven't driven any of the new 7-8-9 speed autos, I suspect they shift even more. That's what those gears are for. As for the trans "learning" your driving habits, I'll just say that after a while I think I was learning the trans and finding it more and more satisfactory, not the other way around. I have been driving for 45 years and have mostly owned manual trans vehicles, just for reference.

All that said, I think this motor would be very nice with the 6MT. So to you guys that have 'em, please wind that motor out and snap off a few redline upshifts for me please :)

Was a challenge to find a new Taco with manual transmission. None of the dealers in my area had any in stock. I got lucky two weeks ago. One with the options I was looking for came in. Any recommendations to maximize MPG?

That's kind of how I felt about all the auto trans bashing going on. It is a 6 speed, it's going to shift a lot but I have a manual so I just stay out of those conversations. I have been driving manuals since my first vehicle almost 30 years ago ('76 Chevy truck) and I will say, I like this one a lot. The VVT kicks in abruptly around 3500 rpm and this little mill pulls hard. Ironically, my daily driving mostly consists of sixth gear around 1800-2200 rpm where I get 22mpg. I find it very drivable. It shifts nicer than my dad's 2010 2.7 5 speed manual.

I've had my 2016 Manual for about 2 months now. Loving it. I just broke the 20MPG mark by driving efficiently. This is my 1st 6 speed ever. Gonna keep pushing and see if I can hit 21/22 MPG. Note, this is daily driving to from work (~10 miles) using mostly interstate.

Edit: This is a V6 Manual btw. Not a 4 banger.

I bought a 2016 Tacoma on 31 March. As far as I know, none of the dealers in my area had the model I wanted with the auto transmission in stock. Back before the Revolutionary War, I learned to drive on a jeep with a stick shift, so I went to a dealer to try out a Tacoma V6 with the manual transmission. Well! After a cruise around the area, I bought it.

I thought it might take me a couple of hours to re-adapt myself to a manual, but it took less time than that. It's a damned slick manual. First Gear to me seems like a stump puller, but I am going through the gears in order. I suspect some owners get their trucks moving by starting off in Second Gear, not a practice I think is good for the engine or transmision...but what do I know? Next to nothing. :)

If you're doing a lot of city driving, I can't help you much with MPGs. On the highway, use 6th as much as possible, shift before 3000 RPM unless you need extra power, and keep the stock tires on. That formula gets me 21-22 on average.

Nice truck, pretty much the same as mine. I see you dipped/painted the grill insert, but left the trim ring/ Toyota emblem chrome.
I was thinking of doing this.. now I'm sure I want to!

I've had my 2016 Sport AC 6 MT for about 6500 miles now and a couple of things to pass on -
For Max Mileage - watch the little blue display display between the Tach and Speedo...Let it teach you when to shift up or down for the best mileage. Speed is a huge factor - going from a stead 60 to 70 will cost you a couple MPG. Tires make a big difference. My MT's will suck more fuel than the AT's. Mileage is very dependent on terrain. Here in the Seattle area we have a lot of hills and I go up gravel roads to mountain tops for work all the time - Hill climbing sucks fuel-big time. Anyone in flat terrain will have better mileage reports. For those that complain about what they feel is a lack of HP with this 3.5 has not learned what's available between 3500 and 6000 RPM. Wind it to 6K in 1st and quickly shift to 2nd and enjoy the sound of a nice period of rubber looking for traction.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Is there 330 ft lbs of torque?

Or is the flywheel giving a false sense or power.

My number one disappointment with the new truck is that it cost everyone the TRD supercharger program.

Number 2 is that is has less power than the outgoing truck.

Not trying to start a argument but how does the 2016 have less power? It has increased HP and torque numbers within 1 or 2 of the 4.0.

I am not either haha. But i pull a trailer a lot, and the extra power really makes it more pleasant.

You got me stomped in mpg though haha!

Last i looked my lifetime average is 12.5 mpg on premium.

But i wouldn't trade it, i love my truck. That 2016 interior is nice! And the updated trailer plugs in the bumper too!

Great if i could ever get out of the bullshit traffic here!

Really though its no race car, but it is decently quick and has enough ass to tow happily. I really think this is how all 4.0 should have come stock.
