Nice AR but I think you should hold off on the 5 year old going shooting for now. I don't think that at that age they grasp the responsibility that comes with shooting. I started my boy out at 9 with a red rider bb gun. He would shoot cans spiners and crickets of the back patio. When he was 10 I got him a 10/22. Not scopes either. Iron sights so he would learn how to properly aim. For his 13th bday his grandfather passed him down a nickel 1911 colt. We shoot about 2 times a month ad he is a hell of a shooter nomatter what he is shooting. My point being start himbout small and he will learn to master the weapon. If you start him out to big and to loud it could be intimidating and not a fun experience. Gl

I started supervised around 5 or 6. VERY CLOSELY supervised, with a single shot bolt-action .22
It's not too young, IMO, as long as you are enforcing/emphasizing the safety aspect above all else.

I see what your saying, and you could always pick up another one should the need arise.

Went to two stores today to buy some bulk 5.56. Came home empty handed and disappointed. I'm trying to figure out if I can buy mail order. NY is so effed up with gun laws that constantly change most places wont ship here even if it is legal. Anyone have any advice besides "move"? We can hardly ever even find any 22LR to buy around here.

I got a pink Cricket for my 7yo daughter and with her ADHD I had to give it up. She got frustrated very quickly, almost as quickly as myself. So I shelved the Cricket for the next daughter. I had a H&R .223/20g combo that I got out a few years later and put an ATI adjustable stock on for her. She does better now, but doesn't care for the 20g much.

But I will not recommend the Cricket. It's a pain to load and wasn't very accurate.

If she doesn't like the 20ga you could always try her out with a .410; the smaller charge will mean less recoil and volume when she shoots it, and the smaller package will mean she has to focus more on her aim. H&R makes a good cheap reliable one. :notsure:

What part of NY? Over here in the western part 22LR is aplenty. But we have a shortage of 22 mag.
