Whats up everyone! Im going to do an oil change soon and want to know if i should go to synthetic oil instead of regular? Before my taco I had an '06 civic 1.8 liter and ran synthetic in that but because I lived in Gillette, WY and it gets quite chilly there. I am now in california so what I'm asking is if synthetic is really all around better for the motor other than for just cold starts.
Also, is the K&N air filter worth the money? Or just get another one for the Toyota dealer?
    Thanks in advance.

I like synthetic because I want to go as long as possible between my oil changes. It cuts down on costs, work for me, and reduced waste significantly for the environment.

If you are going to be one of those people that will not allow logic, reasoning, or science to penetrate your brain and you will always change your oil at 3-5K no matter what, just because it gives you warm fuzzies on the inside, then stick with dyno oil. It's cheaper.

If you will follow logic and reasoning then go with a high quality full synthetic and change every 10K+ miles (what ever your oil and filter allow you to go).

If you are under warranty, you should change it every 5k.

    Too few to list.
I've noticed the Taco tick is more prominent with dino oil. With synthetic, it's quieter and it really does feel the engine is smoother. Plus I can go 7500 miles or so rather than 5K changes. As for which brand, I know some other brands are better than others but I'm not picky. I just get whatever big brand name syn oil is on sale and stick to Toyota filters.

If you do go Synthetic, stay Synthetic for the rest of the life of the truck. It's not good to go back and forth. Mobil 1 FTW.

If your going to hold on to the truck until the wheels fall off, the defiantly go Synthetic.

Right on thanks everyone. Heading to AZ so gotta get it done before I head out. Is the dealer the only place for them drain plug gaskets? $2.50 is steep for one haha

I had a K&N drop in air filter in my T100. Truck maybe sounded a little different, but I also had a catback on it. After a clean and re-oil it gummed up my MAF and the CEL came on.

Everything I hear on tacowerld says that the stock Tacoma intake and exhaust are not any kind of bottleneck. Replacing either will affect little other than the sound it makes. I plan to stick with Toyota OEM paper and my stock exhaust.

I go synthetic. Did dyno oil with the free dealer service up to 19K, then decided that free service was worth exactly what I was paying for it and struck out on my own. Mobil1. We get cold here, but I'd do Mobil1 even if I was in SoCal.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
I bought like 10 online and I wanna say they were cheaper than that.

That's just a myth. Over at BobIsTheOilGuy there are people who go back and forth all the time with no issues. Not surprisingly, a lot of the oils you can buy nowadays are synthetic blends that are made up of a conventional + synthetic base stocks. Gives you a slightly better oil than dino, but without the cost of a full synth.

Yep - another example of the proliferation of bad information found all over the internet:
