Importance of OEM pads/rotors?

My father has 94,000 miles on his original pads/rotors. The pads are almost shot. I haven't measured them but I suspect the rotors may be getting thin as well.

I'm tempted to buy him OEM replacements because he's made it a really long time with OEM parts -- and I've never gotten 94,000 miles out of non-OEM pads or rotors.

What do you think?

 

If the OE pads provide him adequate stopping power, why not? OTOH, I'd use a ceramic based pad from a parts house personally.

It's not the pad / rotor that's gotten the mileage, it's the driver.

BTW, it's quite unlikely there is a rotor wear issue. Very common to use 2 sets of pad to one rotor. But still worth measuring just to be sure.

Just be sure to clean them up (scotch brite pads and brake cleaner) and then bed the replacement pads properly.

 

I just changed out pads and the OEM rotors at around 174,000 miles. I think I went through 4 sets of pads over that time.

 

I swear my factory rotors warped before I even made it out of the dealership parking lot, and I finally got around to replacing the pads / rotors with this:

I'm not usually one to plug a product, but WOW, I'm impressed with how much of an improvement this yielded. The truck STOPS now. Night and day different between OEM.
I can't speak for longevity yet, only have about 1,000 miles on them, but for that price / performance, I'd gladly replace them once a year.

 

I'd replace both. No worries then.

 

I got a 100k on the factory pads. They still had life left. Just scuffed up the rotors and put new pads on. I replaced the rotors at 210k with the pads. Well worth the extra money IMO than the lifetime warranty pads out there.

The key to brakes is buying QUALITY...personally I only use Akebonos for brake pads, because I know they are excellent quality. However, OEM is excellent as well, and I have a feeling Toyotas OEM pads are relabeled Akebonos.

As for rotors, I haven't had to replace rotors yet on any of my vehicles (they've all been able to be resurfaced), so I don't feel I can make an adequate recommendation.

 

R&R Front Pads every 30K regardless and Rears every 60-80K Regardless and see when Drums and rotors wear and replace after 1 cut !

 

So I see you like to throw money away, regardless.

Pads every 30K, Shoes every 60K - 80K. That is totally insane, but it is your money. I have never had to replace the Pads under 100K Miles.

 

The only people I know of that change their pads that early are people who only drive in cities all the time, and even then that's uncommon...

Replace pads and rotors with OEM, that's what I think.

I've had good luck with Toyota pads and rotors (and so has your father, apparently) so why risk using another brand?

105k on factory pads and rotors. But I will be changing both. I let the pads go too far, and now the rotors are marked up from the worn pads. I am going to just go to advanced and pick up whatever they sell in the mid range price point.

 

I got 75k out of my front pads and figure I could have gone to almost 100k.

I went OEM, but they only cost me about $40.

 

You bahstid, lol. Where did you find OEM pads for 40? I paid close to a C note. Wtf

 

I'll have to dig up the part number and invoice again. I believe there are three types of OEM pads. I got the basic Ceramic ones. There are also the originals and the TRD performance pads.
