I bought my truck this week. When I was at the dealer, I asked to see the Carfax. Salesman told me he would get it. Well, a test drive and shit load of paper work later, I became the proud owner of my first Tacoma (which I love).

Of course, I forgot to get the Carfax, which I didn't even think about until my boss told me he had taken the liberty of getting it for me (he has unlimited access I guess). It was reported stolen 4/25/15 and recovered 5/03/15. A duplicate title is also reported around that time.

What do? It's a '10 4x4 base and I eventually want to trade into a '12+ OR. I don't want this to bite me in the ass when I go to trade or sell.

What would you do? Return? Get some money back? Suggestions welcome

Forgive me if I am wrong ,someone may come in and correct me.

I believe that in order to receive a duplicate title you must prove that you are the rightful owner of the vehicle. Since the Tacoma was recovered it either a: went back to the original owner or b: became the property of the insurance agency that wrote the owners a check for a new vehical. Recovery means that it was a stolen vehicle not that it is stolen. Basically I do not see this as being a problem so long as you get it checked by a mechanic. Drive it like you stole it is a saying for a reason.

I think it has a salvage title now.

EDIT: I would go back to the dealer I bought it from and demand them a full refund.
    OR
I would pick out a 2012 or something newer for the same price on their lot.
I am almost positive that the dealership can get into trouble with the law for selling you a salvage title vehicle as a clean title.

If the previous owner was compensated for the truck after it was stolen, then the truck should have a salvage title and the dealership should have made that clear when they sold it. If that's the case, and they sold it to you as a clean title vehicle, you could take them to court over it. I'd imagine they would want to avoid that at all costs since they are obviously at fault, and they'll do whatever it takes to make you happy (i.e. use it as leverage to get a killer deal on the '12 you want).

Certain states automatically issue salvage titles after a vehicle has been stolen/recovered, even if nothing is wrong with the vehicle.

Exactly because you never know what they did to it.

Yes op not to beat a dead horse but if they sold it as clean title I would take it back and leverage that to get a Tacoma you want maybe even a new 16.

Please do update us on outcome.

Everyone is assuming stuff w/no facts regarding stolen, payouts etc. We're talking 9 days from recorded theft to recorded recovery. Even if that's just right, have you ever seen an insurance company that would have paid out that quickly? Me neither.

The duplicate title may not have been in relation to the theft at all. Could be the owner just couldn't find their title, had to have a dup issued to trade the vehicle in.

OP the theft report is a matter of public record. You should be able to get a full copy of the report and recovery from the Clerk of Court and see if there are any interesting tidbits or photos in the writeup.

You should definately investigate, but don't go full panic just yet.
