Racing Seats in a 2nd Gen without triggering the airbags?

This pending issue has been resolved and the seats in my truck are in. No SRS airbag light is illuminated and all is well.

 

So how'd you get it all setup? This is something I've always wanted to do but would need to sack up to do it lol.

 

It's not hard, just time consuming, and make sure you wear some latex or nitrile gloves.
This project turned my hands into prunes.

All you have to do is simply remove the airbag wiring and transfer it to the underside of the seat via zip ties and using some of the old clips if you are careful enough to not break them. Transfer them over similar to stock and all will be well.

If you use the planted brackets you can also bolt up some of the old stuff to the bracket itself.

Awesome! So you went with the OCS bypass modules for both seats??

Basically need recaro brackets+seats+modules and done?

 

I didn't even buy any modules. I just transferred over the old SRS wiring and equipment to under the new seat brackets just like stock and ran it.

The tough part was making sure that non of the wiring got pulled on as the seat slid back.

Each seat and wiring took half an afternoon. Two days. The stock seats were weird to pull apart but I was able to get it done no problem with a bit of patience to avoid ripping and tearin gthem apart. I could still run them if I choose to go back to stock one day, but that day will probably never come.

Day three involved fine tuning and tweaking the wiring and bolt up locations of stuff to make 100% there would be zero issues. They have full range of motion front and back, and everything plugs up as it should.

 

Sweet deal! Quick question though, will the bags tucked under the seats deploy God forbid an accident occurs? Looking to get a suspension seat myself. These stock seat are not any help with my lower back problems

 

Yeah that's why I swapped mine out also.

Do not get a suspension seat. Over time the suspension portion on it can wear out and then you are left with a half ass sort of suspension seat which can do more harm than good.

Yes the bag can deploy under the seat in the event of an accident. According to a guy who is an engineer on this site, he said that the bag would not have enough force to do anything to you, the seat, and the structure of the cab though.

I was thinking of getting some suspension Corbeau seats, but I get what your saying with the wear factor overtime. No beuno for sure when it does wear out. Will have to look at other models and see which ones give optimum lumbar support, etc.

It's still pretty scary to know the airbag will deploy though. Reminds me of those prank where people place them under seat cushion and deliberately deploy them on unsuspecting friends. Funny as hell, but not when your on the receiving end I be lol.

 

I'm not worried about it. The material that the seat airbags are made of are a very soft fabric that will puncture easily in the event of deployment with a bunch of sharper objects surrounding it (The sharp end of the zip ties, bolts, seat staples etc.) I was starting to tear one of the eyelets on the fabric which mounts up to the stud just by removing it from the stud alone. I have been thinking of other mounting alternatives to try and place it out more towards the side, but I have found no other solutions at the moment, so until then I'm just going to use it like I have it.

Yeah that is what I was worried about with getting a suspension seat so I'd rather get some solid seats which offer no movement or anything. I love the seats themselves. They have a natural contour which follows how a spine should be and it keeps you in that position. The thigh bolsters keep you planted in turns. I hardly even know I am making sharp corners anymore. Offroad I cannot say much for them as I have not gone yet and have been trying to take care of everything I could think of on the truck before I do. As an overall though. I am very pleased with them.

 

I have Corbeau seats with built in Lumbar support... Has a tube and the ball thing for pumping an arm cuff on it... lol I pumps up and will move your lower back probably 3"

This just isn't jiving with my experiences, in that photo of the bottom of your new seat I don't see that you transferred the seat position sensors over to your new seats ? So how did you get away without using the bypass module ? Are you 100% sure that your airbag system is still armed ?

 

My concern is making sure it doesn't trip the light on not necessarily bypassing it.

Also. That shot is of the drivers seat, not the passenger. The position sensor on the driver seat was tied somewhere close to the rail. It's such a small sensor that you can't see it in that shot is all.

 

id be worried about rear passengers 1. kicking the airbag under the seat. 2. airbag exploding into their shins in the event of an accident.

You could literally unplug the airbag, use a multimeter to get how many ohms they are, and buy the same resistors (a buck or two for a pack of many) and wire that in its place with an inline very low amp fuse (that would pop in case of an actually bag deployment). Much safer etc.

 

So what did you do for the passenger seat position sensors and the passenger seat occupant detection system ?

 

I wouldn't mind doing that at all actually. I may have to do that.

Oh and and and, the bag cannot be reached by a passenger unless they have tiny baby feet and can somehow twist their foot a full 180*...

Like I said. I transferred EVERYTHING over.

 

Either way id be woried about that bag being deployed into someones shin etc.
