Not that I want to be an ass but what other sensors could possibly took over the Crank position sensor role to keep engine running? Just curious .... since with out crank sensor ECM would not know which spark plug to fire so unless there is something else to read that data, engine would stop. No?

multiple camshaft position sensors. same thing every other manufacturer uses. I can unplug crank sensor on a Colorado and you would never know other than the engine light

Maybe a tad unrelated.....however, in our 2005 Scion tC, I've had a CEL with a code of crankshaft position sensor forever! Replaced it myself, problem still exists! Car drives perfectly fine....:annoyed::notsure:

My old Canyon ('05) lost a CPS and I thought the engine was coming out the hood. I couldn't shut it off fast enough.

    What code specfically?

Not saying the CPS on your Scion was not faulty but sometimes depending on the code thrown, it could be a few different possibilities and what you replaced was not the culprit but just one of a few possible candidates.

Ok I but his post talks about Crankshaft sensor being bad, CAM shaft position sensor is totally different thing.
I never heard multiple Crankshaft position sensors, but CAM sensors are yeah one for each bank...
    Thats why my curiosity.

P0012 specifically means Camshaft position timing over-retarded (bank 1) which would not mean the sensor has failed but there is an issue with cam shaft timing. It might also indicate a problem with your VCT solenoid.

P0340 is the failed camshaft sensor circuit code.

Thanks, I'll have to look into this further. At least it's another option!

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
Very good point. Mine failed, on a very hot day. I am wondering is some heat shielding might be in order?

Mine failed on vacation, on July 4th. I was in the mountains, cool day too, probably about 72. Fortunately I was about four miles away from a dealership and was able to limp it there.they had to order the part the next day, got it back the following day. I haven't had an issue since then.

Mine died immediately after pulling into 5 lanes of rush hour traffic in the rain about 10 days ago. Long story short it was out of service for 6 days. Took them three days to diagnose CPS (had to open a case with Toyota). Work order does not reflect catalytic converter replacement. I well understand that ANY part can fail prematurely. But my wife is now way less than thrilled with regard to off-road and/or pulling the camper in freeway traffic or out-of-the-way places. From my perspective she is not being very reasonable but I will indeed be looking at something else should I have an issue in that circumstance.

I REALLY like the design and features of the truck. I've had the trans TSB done and don't have a problem with shifting. But I am disappointed in the amount of time I've had to spend at the dealerships (one little better than the other) for a truck with 2200 miles. So far the worst experience with a new car I've ever had. Here's hoping the kinks are slowly being worked out.

And THANKS to Tacoma World for keeping me abreast of the issues!

My truck lost all power today while cruising at 70 down the freeway. Trac Off and CEL came on. I was able to get off the freeway and limp it to a gas station parking lot doing 5mph bucking down the road. They weren't able to figure it out today but the service manager called and said they were looking at fuel pressure. I still think its the CPS. Although I didn't get the A/T overhead message.

Yes! Thats exactly what happened to me too. This is a very dangerous problem. I was in the middle of the road. Couldn't even get it to move 5 feet. I was on a slight uphill incline. Thankfully a police officer was driving by and was able to push me into a business parking lot. Reading through the thread, it appears to be happening at an uncomfortably frequent level. This all happened with two toddlers in the back.

Yeah it's definitely a safety issue. I'm lucky traffic was very light and I was able to swerve over 4 lanes to the off ramp.

If they still haven't figured out the issue when they call me back today I'm going to mention the crankshaft sensor problem. I don't like telling people how to do their job but if they've had it a couple days and can't figure it out I'm sure they won't mind a suggestion from a a shade tree mechanic such as myself.
