ive debated this as well. But currently my job pays my fuel. As much as i dont want to put miles on the runner that are unnecessary it would be very tough to not jump in it every morning. I just rolled 149,000 miles.

i think ill just keep driving mine until the womans car blows up. Then either give her the runner and buy a truck or buy her something.

Sidenote: having a rear vibe. feels like tires but i had it before these new ones. U joints? hubs?

Hmm didn't know that. Is it all the time, or while braking? If its the latter maybe warped rotors. Only thing I can really think of.

It may be worth doing a bit of research on just how long it takes to make a commuter worth while, or if it even makes sense at all.

For example, I drive about 20 miles a day in my supercharger 99 4runner averaging about 16mpg, and consuming premium fuel.

I thought, man I should really get a POS commuter. I bought an 86 toyota pickup which averages about 25mpg and consumers regular fuel. The kicker? I bought it for just $1700.

Each month it costs me about $69.62 to drive my 4Runner. That's figuring 20 miles a day, 5 days a week (I won't count weekends), at 16mpg and $2.59/gallon of premium.

On the other hand, it costs me about $41.11 to drive the pickup. Again- 20 miles a day, 5 days a week, 25 mpg and $2.39/gallon of regular.

So with a difference of $28.51 a month, it would take me just under 60 months to pay for my commuter with the fuel saved.

But then I need to figure in insurance on the truck... $28.59/month. Registration? Just paid $85 for the year, or $7.08/month.

So now we see that I am actually not saving a dime driving this POS. In fact, it's costing me $7.16 extra to drive it every month. $85.92 each year. If I ever need to do any maintenance on it, that'll be an additional loss.

However, it does allow me to tear my 4Runner apart for weeks at a time and have another vehicle, so that's nice.

Excellent points here. One thing to keep in mind though is that the truck is going to go through more fuel than most smaller cars. Also a lot of people do drive more than 20 miles a day. A few other things to take into consideration is that yes, it is extra expenses for maintenance and all that because you have a second vehicle, but it decreases the amount of miles you have to do on your offroading rig. For example, bearings axles and all that stuff have to be replaced more often on a lifted truck than they do on a stock one because they're putting more stress than what they were designed to take, not to mention the more miles you put on one vehicle the more likely it is to have problems. So for some, its more logical to keep miles off of the off-roading vehicle to prevent breakage while off road. On the flipside of that sometimes it'll also cost more to maintain the off-road vehicle for daily driving use. It's all retrospective. For some people it's more viable to have a piece of shit daily driver and then a separate off-road vehicle, while for others it's more viable to have 2 in 1. Just depends on the person

I am not forgetting those things, I just left maintenace items out because a commuter will need to be (or should be, rather) maintained as well. Of course smaller tires on a commuter will be much cheaper, but really anything else should be quite similar.

The price of gas is also irrelevant unless you're using regular in the commuter, and another grade in the other. In which case all that matters is the difference in price between the two. Unless of course you're purchasing an electric car.

Indeed a car can double your 16mpg, but even if you're saving $80/month in fuel, minus insurance, minus registration, you're still looking at nearly two years to make up the amount spent on the even a $1000 commuter.
