Toyota has yet to outline much in the way of powertrain specifics, other than to say that the Highlander's 3.5-liter V-6 will "generate significantly more horsepower, provide enhanced fuel efficiency and deliver a more direct driving feel by expanding the lock up range."

For comparison's sake, the 2016 Toyota Highlander presently extracts 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque from its same-size V-6, netting middling EPA ratings of 19 miles per gallon city and 25 mpg on the highway. With the addition of direct injection, two more forward speeds in the transmission and other refinements, it should be possible for the new model to achieve meaningful increases in both power and efficiency.

Maybe they will trade torque for HP via the tune? Or maybe it will require premium fuel?

This forum has enough issues with 6 speeds, 8 would make some heads pop.

They should just throw a split ten speed from a semi in the Tacoma and be done with it. The low ranges for all the people who want to tow space shuttles and the upper ranges for those who want the fuel economy of a Prius.

    And make it a diesel.:boink:

    It's about the competition.

Highlander need to have 8 speed auto because the Honda Pilot has 9 speed auto and 6speed auto on the lower trim.

Until GM (or Nissan) bring in a midsize truck with more than 6speed auto, there is no need for Toyota to offer more than 6 speed.

"the Highlander's 3.5-liter V-6 will "generate significantly more horsepower" i dont see 280 hp as being significantly more then the tacomas 278.. and i dont see them using premium fuel in the highlander either..

The wife's rx has the 8 speed. The gearing is much better suited to the torque band of this engine. Much smoother as well....it may shift a lot, but if you aren't staring at the tach, you wouldn't know it.

from what I can tell different engines all together. this will be a DI gas engine with stop/start technology. I rather have the atkin/otto in the tacoma and forgo the stop/start.

the hunting of gears in the 6 spd is annoying that I wish there was a way to get a 5 spd. I can only imagine what will happen to my beloved 4runner when the next gen comes out.

I've said this before...Toyota is exiting the truck market. That became clear to me when they released the 'new' Tacoma.

    You really think so ?

If so, please explain why the dealerships can`t keep very many on the lot.

Or keep selling Tundras as well. What evidence is there that Toyota is "leaving the truck market"? Sounds like a pretty ignorant thing to say honestly all because you don't "like" the new Tacoma

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    It definitely looks like.

Exhibit A : Despite Tundra sales hitting complete utter gutter for past couple years, no redesign for 2017, what is strange there is no mention of 2017 Tundra model and we had Detroit, NY and Chicago auto shows. On all of them Toyota only presented TRD Pro 2016 Tundra (farewell attempt?)

Exhibit B: 2016 Tacoma is really a nice face-lifted 2gen Tacoma with cheaper drivetrain out of the Toyota car division. Toyota did not invest much into it, hence why the same vibrations that 2015 had, the same front diff problems etc. 1GR production line in US was cut because Tundra dropped first, and Tacoma now. So no more Truck line engines in US? and no more updates to 5.7i force ?

Exhibit C: Toyota has been running 4-9 % profit, that is at best $3000-$4000 per truck. Considering how much frame replacements, spring replacements and now ongoing engine/transmission/transfer case/vibrations issues costing corporate Toyota, their truck division in US has to be deeply in red.

So ... Quo Vadis Toyota ?

Then you should buy up all the Tacomas you can get your hands on and sell them when they're "collector's items", like Oldsmobiles.
