Im not sure about the 4 low thing, but when the diff light blinks its not engage, To engage it, roll foward and turn the wheel to the left and then to the right.

Search, there's been plenty of threads on this.. I believe you have to put it in neutral, come to a complete stop and wait for the beeps to stop...

I have a 2002 and have read the directions over and over. I have not been able to engage the rear diff with the button either.

not sure about the 1st gens, but u'd be better off creating your own thread in the 1st gen section where it can get the right visibility

I seem to remember with my 01 4runner, that you had to be in 4low to lock the diff. To get into 4low you had to throw her in neutral. to make any of these changes take effect immediately, you just had to back up a few inches.

I'm piloting the 06 dbl cab 6 foot box now and loathe the fact that us canadians can't get this model with TRD off road.... only sport. I didn't want to sacrifice 12" of box space for a locking diff, but if I can't have mine, maybe this is God making you suffer like me.

    Good luck.

ha yea you have to be in 4low to lock the rear diff...i went to the dealer and had them put it on a lift to see if it was working. It was working but the light indicator was still blinking..so they fixed the light and it all works now...but it does suck that i cant lock the rear diff in 2 wheel drive
