Recovery Points

Where is the rear recovery points on my 2000 Tacoma 4x4? I took a picture where I think they may be. Can you guys point them out to me?

 

There are none from the factory. You have to add them.

 

A d ring through the hitch hole in your stock bumper (probably will bend the frame plates at some point). Aftermarket like TG bumper or add a 2" receiver and toss in one of those nice hooks.

 

Good thing I asked before I tried at some point...can you direct me to a good set that is wallet friendly and where it installs? Yeah would rather not attach eo the stock bumper. I've got a ball hitch connected onto it anyway.

 

There really isn't a cheap and sturdy solution if you are running a stock bumper. Aftermarket bumpers do come with them of course.

What most do is add a 2" receiver via atow hitch mounted to both rear frame rails where the bumper mounts. Then they add something like this:

A new hitch is half the cost of a TG bumper not really worth buying a hitch unless you get one from Craigslist or a place like LKQ.

 

Yes, but as capetaco pointed out, you should be able to find one used and save a little $$ that way. IIRC, I sold mine for $50 here on the forum in the 1st gen B/S/T thread.

 

I have a Reese tow hitch that attaches to the frame that is still sitting with my stock bumper that I put away after I installed my new TG rear bumper. Too bad I live in California. @Albinator

 

Could I at a hook to the rear frame somewhere (or d-ring) like it is with the front passenger hook?

 

Surprised nobodys mentioned this but the rear of your frame looks pretty rusty. You could box it in and weld another crossmember just behind the bumper and have a hook on it.

 

It all comes down to if your extracting someone or extracting yourself.

Pulling others a receiver hitch works best .

Then getting your vehicle out when the rear bumper is close to ground level slings around the rear axle work well protecting them from being cut with padding

Then if the OP could fabricate most likely no need to ask.

 

Im not nure why there isnt a factory hook on it. My 2002 came with one. Check for 2 bolt holes about 2 in apart in the bottom of the frame, drivers side.

Edit: nm. Looking at the picture in your first post, they would be just below where you thought a recovery point should be.

 

It depends how much force is gonna be pulled. These 1st gen rear bumpers are pretty stout, if there aint that much weight, you could just wrap a strap around it twice. Personally I'd get a hitch with a ball off craigslist.

 

I broke my mount off tugging a s-10 out of the woods.

 

Thats why I said it depends on the load, we do this the pull dead tractors and trucks on the ram charger we have at the ranch with no problems

 

My bumper has the stock ball but I've heard not to use it to pull/recover others

 

The balls have been known to fail. They break, and now you have a metal hitch ball being shot at you from a 30 foot long slingshot. Deadly to say the least.
