For what you're doing I think you got a great bike. Jealous of your carrier you made too, although I'm thinking a trailer is my best bet.

Those 690's are super reliable. There is a dude that has rode one around the world, the long way. I hope my 990 is that reliable! (edit: the RTW guy-) http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/rtw-with-noah-on-a-ktm-690.781893/

The performance is there, so for me the SOHC doesn't matter as long as the performance is there.

True. Just wonder why they haven't jumped over to a dohc when the extra performance would be there as well. Although singles make heads really easy

67hp stock, but you can get a lot more with intake, exhaust and tune. They are fairly restricted from the factory, like all bikes these days. I uncorked my 990 and it frightens me sometimes. Unintentional wheelies... It's a fun bike but in retrospect I should have got a 690. I thought my wife would ride with me more.

Yup that's why I like it. Essentially a lot more powerful drz since weights are comparable. Superduke 990? Have a friend that just bought an 1190, thing looks mean

Mine is an adventure. It's so easy to do triple digits on knobbies in the dirt it's ridiculous, which is why it frightens me sometimes. I ride it like a dirtbike, hold it wide open, fan the clutch and click through the gears. It's the stupidest dirtbike ever made. 114hp stock, don't know what it's at now with the Rottweiler intake and FMF 4.1 cans with the tune, but it is significantly more.

There's 4 valves on it so it's not lacking in valves from SOHC. I loved SOHC for valve checks. Two screws to pop the rocker arms out and change shims if necessary; there's really no need to even lock the crank since the camshaft isn't being removed.

That's nice then. The only hassle about shim buckets is having to remove the cam from chain and retiming it.

Bike is still running great today, got about another 40miles on it. Starting right up just like before when it was stock

I don't have to remove the cam chain to change shims on any of the shim-under-bucket valved bikes I've ever had.

How the hell? not pull the chain all the way out, just pull out the cams from the timing chain is what I meant. No way to get the buckets out without entire cam removal on the drz

    Really?

The KTM 950 had the chains turn a sprocket just under the cams which each also have sprockets on them so you would have to remove the cams to change shims but you wouldn't need to break the chain since the chain was driving the lower sprocket. The KTM 690/Husky 701 you remove two screws per to remove the rocker arm shafts to access the shims, the cam chain sprocket has holes in it so the rocker arm shafts slide out through the holes so you don't need to break the cam chain.

KTM 950 head showing each cam w/sprockets on the end.

Nope not like that at all. The cam sprockets are permanently attached to the camshafts so you release the tension on the cam chain and pull the cam up (opposite the sprocket) and it'll lower the sprocket and slide out from the chain. No physical chain breaking.

Ah that's not horrible. On the 525 you have to break the chain to remove the cam, however it has screw and locknut adjusters so you don't have to remove the cam except when tearing the engine down for a top-end.
