My dad gave me this one. Pretty awesome little knife. Don't carry it very often though.

How long have you gone before honing? Just out of habit I go two or three weeks tops before I hone my daily pocket knife, full kitchen block, razor and anything else in the house that's supposed to be sharp. No idea how long I'm supposed to strop it though. I will say there's never been a closer shave than when that razor comes fresh off the stones.

Nice enough excuse to drink whiskey and not be bothered for a few hours I say haha
    @mjbtaco
Yes. I can't do any edge that curves inward toward the Spine. ( this would require replacing all of my stones with identical types that are half the current width.) If you did that for me, youd have free sharpening For life!
Serrated edges don't give me much to work with, and nobody else will bother with them anyways. I always do my best best but won't make promises with those.

    Otherwise,
    Nope.
Axes, kitchen knives, razors, garden shears, filet knives, scissors...
Hunting and skinning knives are my specialty.
My sister is a hairdresser and In Law is a seamstress and have scissors worth a week of pay so I've gotten practice there.
I took it fishing and did the whole crew's knives & got free fish cleaning a month or two ago haha

I'm cheap man I do it for beer money. Gimme a call and ship em in! I've got about a week and a half lead time now.

Well.... ive been using the straight for about 2 years now and haven't honed it yet. I usually do about 40-50 strops on the leather side before shaving, then 30-40 strops on the cloth side and 30-40 strops on the leather side after shaving. it may be over doing it but hey, I haven't needed a stone for it yet. still no razor burn or rough shaves! I doubt I could properly hone it on a stone anyways. I wouldn't know where to start haha. I do my EDC knife about once every week or so depending on how much I use it. but I have the Lansky honing kit for that. im nowhere near confident enough to just sharpen it with a stone yet. the kit gets it plenty sharp for me though.

A properly and regularly stropped edge doesn't need honing.

Got a miyabi Santuko kitchen knife for $80 3 days ago from the unclaimed baggage store.

Used it as a Guinea pig for learning on my edge pro apex that I got a couple days ago as well in a trade

Oh damn! Well looks like I'm over honing and under stroping haha cool good to know.
    Whatever works for you man
I will say you absolutely must have a precision sharpener to hone it. I've got the edge pro professional which makes it as idiot proof as you can possibly get
And even then, if I'm not extremely careful I'll take one wrong stroke and fuck the edge up and have to start back a stone or two lower.
If stroping works for you don't stop . do you use any compound on your strop? I've just got a cheap rawhide / smooth side and I hone it so often I only go 15 / 20 strokes on that but I'd like to change to what you're doing.

so I never looked up the price of this guy till just now, but I got it as a gift and it apparently does pretty solid job. its got a cloth side and a smooth leather side. so far since the razor is staying plenty sharp with no compound, I haven't used any compound. I just dry strop it. it may have residual oil on the blade from when I last put it away but not much since I wipe it clean before stropping. This is the one I use

    http://www.theartofshaving.com/Small-Hanging-Razor-Strop/00670535680109,default,pd.html

Now im nowhere even close to a novice at this so who knows, I could be doing more harm than good in the long run. I just picked up straight shaving maybe 2 years ago.

I am getting ready to put meat on the grill and went to my knife drawer to get one, when I saw this little Victorinox and realized that it is almost 40 years old. This was my first knife that my dad gave me for Christmas when I was 6 years old. I am now 45. I had it in my pocket every day through high school (yeah for the old days where we could carry knives to school). Amazing that I never lost it.

That's really cool. Your post reminded me of this.....my pops scored a case or these at a yard sale (12 I think) all new in their boxes back around '85. I was 13 yo. I took it to school every day and eventually it ended up on my key ring for the past 26 years.

While were here, I just picked this up for next bow season.

Wish I had that too. After I bought my Sage 2 for $150 I had some buyers remorse. Can't bring myself to pay for the 940 yet.
