I've been lurking on this forum for a few weeks in anticipation of trading in my 2006 Tacoma for a 2016 early next year. I'm posting now because I have an idea I think many would appreciate.

One of my favorite mods on my 2006 are the blacked out headlights (BHLM) and HID projector retrofit. I see a couple people have already tinkered with their headlights, with mixed results, but neglected to post any write ups so far. Given the current lack of reliable instructions and replacement parts at the moment, I can understand why everyone else is reluctant to try.

However, if we share the risk across several interested members, that wouldn't be such a problem. That's why I propose a Kickstarter campaign to purchase the headlight currently listed on Ebay for experimentation (passenger side, no DRL for $320 w/ shipping). All we need is 16 people pledging $20 each. Nobody gets charged unless the project goes through. At the end of the project, if the headlight survives, it would be auctioned off to the highest bidder among the participants and the proceeds distributed back to the project participants.

In addition to detailed disassembly instructions, each member would be encouraged to suggest their own favorite modifications or tests as long as they do not destroy the headlight. For example, I am dying to see a projector installed in place of the highbeam (for a quad projector setup) and would be willing to purchase the parts myself.

Best case scenario: we all get our questions answered about modding 3rd Gen headlights, get back most of our money, and no one's ride gets butchered.

Worst case scenario: we each lose $20, but gain valuable knowledge about how to not destroy a headlight assembly that would cost $850 and several days with a disabled truck to replace.

Since I'm busy with a newborn and many of you would be justified in being suspicious of a first-time poster asking for your money, it would be best if someone else takes this proposal and runs with it before the eBay light gets scooped up by someone else.

not a 3rd gen owner but seems like a sound idea if you can get the participants.

I'd be willing to take this on as well... if we can source another light.
