Had mine in twice. Filled first time. Could not replicate second time. Checked fluid second time. Said fluid level perfect.

Got in my truck to pull away and it did it again. Pissed I went back in and grabbed someone, they rode with me. But of course it only did it the first time.

Funny thing, it happens EVERY morning. This morning I decided to record it similar to another tw member. It didn't do it this morning, un-freakin-believable.

Opened a case with toyota, hoping to hear back today. Not really sure why, I already know the answer.

After getting run around from the dealer, they finally decided to check my transmission fluid. It was 3/4 quart low. Truck drives much better. Z

All of you getting your transmission filled, is it eliminating the cold R to D hesitation? This is driving me nuts!

Not here, Mine is still doing all the same things. I think most of the people that report positive experiences are "placebo" effect.

Update: Over the past week mine has not slipped or engaged abruptly. I think this is most likely due to the weather change. The median temp has risen and it has not been below freezing at night. Truck feels much more solid. I am willing to bet it will return once the weather changes back and Jack Frost is nipping at my nose.

My truck is doing the r to d delay. It isn't a 4x4 or TRD.....are the 2 wheel drives coming out of the factory with low transmission fluid? My truck does have three towering package.

I was talking with a tech from the dealership not too long ago about this issue with my truck. They're trying to resolve this with my truck currently. He told me that there are several Toyota models that do this, and has even said that sometimes when a vehicle has been sitting on the lot for long periods of time and they go to move it, they will have a hard time getting D to engage. They definitely know it's an issue, and he said they're working on it. They overfilled mine by a pint per the field rep and it hasn't helped at all.

Kind of funny someone posted the problem would come back when the weather change...

My transmission has been filled (myself) and though feels better, there is this persisting jolt when downshifting 3-->2 or 2-->1 especially in heavy stop and go commute.
The interesting thing and reason I reply to this thread is that this happens mostly when the ambient temp is in the mid to upper 70's...
I live in Orange Co. CA, and never happens in the morning, but quite a bit in the hot afternoons...
I wish I could monitor the trans temp to confirm it is an ATF temp issue.
Good luck to you all, wishing Toyota steps up to the plate.

Just to add to the fray...

My Tacoma also has transmission slip when the truck cold and I go from reverse to forward. You can tell it slips for about 300 feet, then it is fine after that. The dealer added 1 quart of fluid to the transmission and allowed it to overflow while the temperature came up to minimum temperature (per spec). Exactly 1 quart of fluid was recovered. So my transmission was not low from the factory. The dealer is taking responsibility to address this issue, so our next step is for me to leave the truck overnight so they can duplicate the issue from a cold vehicle.

Yesterday I had some time, so I started the truck and let it idle for exactly 1 minute in Park before I backed out of the garage. Interestingly, there was no slip when I shifted into Drive.

This whole thing is starting to sound like a design flaw in the transmission to me. For some design reason, from a cold start there is not enough fluid pressure to compress the clutch pack for 1st gear. No question the the slipping is bad for the transmission, will lead to premature clutch pack failure, and contamination of the fluid with particles from the clutch pack. Given the high cost of transmission repair, I doubt Toyota will be in a hurry to admit the problem.

Mine slips and just started to slip when shifting from either 2-3 or 3-4 cant remember which one exactly. Only happens when cold and only the first time it shifts through gears. Onces it slips once it wont do it again. This just started around 20k miles. WTF!
