Does disconnecting the battery wipe all the settings on the stereo or is there some sort of secondary battery backup that will retain them for awhile? Just curious if I need to document my preferred settings and such. Thanks!

Removal of the battery cables will indeed wipe the radio presets and EQ settings.
If you have access to jumper cables and another vehicle or a jumper box you can keep power to the electronics so you don't lose your settings.

There is a 9V battery device that plugs into the lighter socket. Turn the ignition key to acc. before unplugging the battery and it'll save the settings. It's only a few bucks. Check your local auto parts store.

I've pulled the unit out and disconnected the battery. Only thing lost was the time.

If you even need to change a battery and want to retain your settings if they didn't wipe from the battery dying simple start or jumpstart the vehicle, and disconnect the battery and replace it with it running.

Disconnecting the battery does not erase anything on the radio. I just disconnected my battery for a half hour and when I hooked it back up everything preset on the radio was still there.

Just resets your trips, and fuel economy. Doesn't reset anything on the radio.

Battery acts as a buffer for charging voltage. It's common to have a voltage spike if you unhook then battery while an engine is running and fry one or multiple computers.

I've put quite a few computers that customers did this to

Why would it fry the ecm? You're still feeding 12v through the battery leads from another source.

I think you're confusing the source to be a 'charge' vs. a 'power supply'.

So, quite a few of your customers changed their batteries while the engine is running? Where in the USA is this happening?

When I added a 2nd battery I disconnected the existing battery for about an hour, I did not lose anything.

I've never seen or heard of an ECM, ECU, BCM, ect frying because of that. Seen a lot of guys change batteries at our dealerships like that so the customers settings aren't lost. Plus almost every person at auto zone and other parts stores tell their customers that's how you test for a bad alternator. Do you know how many tow ins you would have if that was true? Voltage spikes can happen any time and will happen if you have a battery or not. When Stators start going bad in the alternator the voltage increases. This can be dangerous but I still haven't seen that fry a computer. Seen some that were putting out around 18v

You confused my question with an argument. I just asked you to confirm that you had quite a few customers change their batteries with the engine running.... as a result they needed a new ECU installed by you.

I'm sure your truck runs too.
