Found this guy terrified of Annie in my back yard. His shell is a little chewed up

 do you have a pond in the backyard?? And is Annie your dog??

My desert tortoise got attacked a few years back as well. Pretty scary being I've had him since he was still in his egg. Pretty sure it was the coons :notsure:

Some time ago I read an article with pictures where someone had rescued a tore up desert tortoise and fiberglassed in a replacement section of the missing shell. I don't know if it was the right thing to do but I was impressed with the effort.

Not sure how fiberglass would be with healing but really, anything helps. About a decade back I took in a fully grown desert tortoise that had been run over and completely cracked it's shell in half. I made a splint out of wood and duct tape. 2 years later and he was pretty much healed! Hard to believe, but they are very resilient.

     Poor thing.

No pond in back yard, stream/swamp across the street. Yes Annie is my dog. She started barking up a storm at "something" after dinner. Went to investigate and found the turtle. Not sure if she attacked it or not :notsure: One of the guys from work said she should be ok to release in a safe place, away from the road. Went to the neighbors back yard and put her under a tree, close to the swamp.

Yeah, dogs are actually known to love turtle shells. Soft and hard with flavor. Haha. The turtle will definitely survive as long as the internals are okay. Only thing you could have done was treat it with antibiotics for a couple weeks until it healed a bit. I actually had to give mine shots. haha

I noticed you have a tortoise shell watch band. Is that where you got the material from?

None in town. Just one an hour or so away. too late, already released her.

The guy from work is very knowledgeable about critters and he said she should be ok  I know nothing about turtles.

I'm scrambling to find a weblink but during my short lived career as a OVR Truck Driver I met a guy that specialized in turtle rescue for the turtles that survived being "watermelon seeded" off the road. He would use fiberglass/resin and embed his business card into the repair/mend and the turtle was usually fine. Very cool!

I hope he did.... but doing 75 on the highway, there was no way I could safely stop and go rescue him.

Did stop traffic one afternoon to let a snapper cross the road
