I am coming from a 5.7L V8 Tundra to the new 3.5L V6 Tacoma. I have kind of always noticed the engine ticked since I bought it. Have 1400 miles on it. Tundra never had a tick.

Is this normal? I've always been told a tick is not good. It's been ticking since day 1.

Where does Toyota recommend "top tier" gasoline?

Been searching the web and it seems pretty normal.

I will see if putting Texaco/Chevron will relieve it.

It's hard to say if it's the lifters, injectors cleaning themselves, or something else.
When I hear mine ticking, I just think of sparkling clean injectors with little bits of carbon flying off. After that, it doesn't bother me as much.

Isn't this the case for all direct injection engines?

The 2016 Tacoma's 3.5L engine is equipped with both direct and port fuel injection system. The ticking sound is a result of the self-cleaning direct fuel injection systems activation and is a normal characteristic of normal system operation. No repair is necessary to remedy this condition.

These engines are loud in general. Direct injection combined with chain driven dual over head cams.

I do wish the engine was quieter. Sitting next to other trucks mine sounds fairly mechanical.... Cheap? Untuned? It makes about as much noise as my Ducati lol. I love my truck regardless.

4runner forum is the same with the ticking. Mine ticks, but I rarely notice it unless I listen for it. Must be a Toyota thing.

the normal ticking sound is the injectors firing. the loud ticking sound is the injectors cleaning themselves

if you are asking why it has injectors, call up O'Reillys and ask for Tacoma V6 glow plugs

Coming from a Subaru BRZ, the FA20 is a close cousin of the injection system. The 3.5L we have in our Tacomas is much more refined, don't get me started on the endless "crickets" threads on the BRZ/FR-S forums. However the ticking is perfectly normal as everyone else has already said. Engines are pretty smart now a days anyway so if somethin was wrong you would get a warning or CEL.

Its pathetic that people spend $35k on a truck and don't read the owners manual. Don't be the dumb ass that does that.

You could show him to the page number so he could go whip out his manual and check it out for himself instead of just putting a dick move comment. Get off your high horse.

OP: normal sound as others have said. It's most likely the self cleaning mode kicking in. The 2nd gens also ticked, but the 3rd gen does make a slightly different sound when the mode kicks in.

It is the injectors cleaning carbon deposits. Also, a little tech tip.. Overhead cam engines=no lifters..... Lifters are used in push rod engines to open and close intake and exhaust valves.

My engine sometimes makes a louder ticking sound than usual... I turn up the radio a little seems to fix it and the whistling rear view mirror thing. a 2-fer.. FTMFW.

It could be the gas. I recently tried Lukeoil gas (Russian) when I noticed the louder ticking... went back to Sonoco and it's normal again.

People noted that fuels with a lower Suplher content I believe it was over at the BRZ forms had their injectors run quiter than gas without it, in the end though it's more of a "cosmetic" thing than anything. You aren't causing any appreciable damage its just a little louder.
