    No. 8.4 is somewhat of a misnomer. Originally it was called the T100/Tundra rear end. No idea where the 8.4 actually came from.

    Both TRD 8.0 and T100/Tundra/8.4 have a 8" ring gear. There is no size difference in the ring gear. However, the T100/Tundra/8.4 has a better casting, the carrier bearing caps are connected with girdles and cast as a single piece (less deflection), ring gear has 12 bolts instead of 10, the carrier bearings are shimmed instead of screw in adjusters, and has a larger pinion shaft.

    So the OR have a dif locker with identical ring gears but the 8.4 overall is more stout basically so with an ARB Air locker it becomes superior to the 8.0?

    Correct. I bent and broke a few things in my TRD. Swapped it out for a tundra axle (so it better matched my front WMS-WMS and for the added strength) and run an ARB now. Zero issues in the last 3.5 years.

    I need to upgrade my rear axle. I've debated going this route vs an ruff stuff housing with a land cruiser 9.5 center. My truck weight 6k+ and climbing. Not sure the 8.4 is up to the task.
