I got one heck of an oil change at the dealer, I'm not happy at all!

I am curious to hear what the dealers states,and what they are going to do.

 

I'll second that.

 

I always double check everything done at a Dealership before I drive off. My oil change was done Friday and I double checked it before pulling out. No oil dip stick or oil cap and the two clips were left undone on the air box. I did the clips right in front of the service tech and had him go get the cap and dip stick. I checked the lug nuts torque and two where hand tight. I never had a problem with this dealership and understand people make mistakes, but this was too many. I hate letting other touch my vehicles and usually do all my own maintenance. After the free 25,000 mile maintenance is done I will be doing my own. However if anyone else touches my truck I have always make oil filter and double check everything done to ensure it's done right.

 

i agree 100% these dipsticks are horrible. my 98 tacoma had the little grooves machined on the end of the dip stick which allowed you to get a good, accurate reading. these dipsticks on teh 2nd gens are horrible. i will be trying this "painted dipstick maneuver" on my 2015

 

I actually find it easier to read the back of the dipstick and then slowly roll it around, you can also rough it up with a little scotch brite too.

This thread and Krazie's suspension install are the biggest reasons I'm a TW member... I remember "attempting" to read through these threads a few weeks before I bought my Tacoma (back when I was a lurker ). It took me about 4 hrs to read through the majority of them... I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe, and at one point my dad came downstairs to the basement where I was at and asked if I was choking.

 

tranny would not be dry but down about 3-1/2 quarts. Anyone who mistakes a tranny pan for an oil pan has no business changing fluids on a vehicle.

 

In his defense: everyone starts somewhere some are just a bit sloppier.

 

That makes two of us...was a bad experience but no damage done...I wish I could've used drinking a 'few beers' as an excuse but I can't. Was just pure brain fart on my end.

 

I've found the easiest way to check the dipstick is to do it when the truck has sat for a bit so the oil has had a chance to settle. Pull out the dipstick, look at it, and put it back it. Don't pull it out, wipe it, stick it back in and then pull it out again to look.

Do we know what the dealer did?

 

Dealer wants me to bring it in ASAP, I've got an appointment for tomorrow. They are going to drain and replace the oil and put the tranny on the machine to be sure. He also said that he would make notes in the records to protective from any future damage that this may have caused.

As far as which dealer, I'll withhold that Pittsburgh dealers name. I've have 9 years of good experiences with this dealer, I sure hope that this is an isolated incident and history supports that. My service manager was very displeased with the report of my problem. He knows my capabilities when it comes to vehicles and knows that I'm up on my maintenance. I'm sure that I'm the last guy that he wanted to see this happen to.

 

I actually think that mentioning the dealer name would be a +1 for their rep based on how well they are dealing with it. Everyone expects the dealers to be a nightmare - in this case you seem to have a good one. The tech made a mistake. Big deal. That can happen anywhere. You have a good service manager there though which in my opinion is more of a positive than a negative.

I think you probably could have just pulled the fill plug on the tranny, stick your finger in and see if you can touch oil. Getting up to temp wouldn't ben necessary if you're just trying to determine if its 5 quarts low. But hey - fuck if I know.

 

Neverstuck, I agree with your rationale, not sure we are of the majority.

 

Good on them for getting you back in asap, taking notes to spare you from future charges that would be related, interested in final result.





For pure asshattery: did you check your blinker fluid and rear diff? They may have added transaxle fluid to you brake pads while changing the bulb in your trunk.

 

+1, you have to let it sit for the oil to drain back in to the pan. Not sure what is so hard about reading the dipstick. It has 2 dimples and if the oil is in between then you are fine. Now I have seen tranny dipsticks that read different on the back and front so if you do not put them back in the way they came out you may get the wrong reading.

 

Ok, here is the final results.... They drained the oil and determined that it was still very slightly overfilled, the techs initial reaction was "it's not too bad, only slightly overfilled" that was when the service manager reminded him that I already took 4 quarts out and then showed him the dipstick picture that I sent.

Next they changed the oil and filter followed by putting it on the tranny machine. They determined that the trans was about 1/2 quart low. It has recently been a problem coming from the factory that some are as low as a quart, so they topped it off, no real issue there.

Next they checked the diffs and confirmed that they were all OK.

Final result, it is noted in my vehicle history that the engine made an odd noise, that the dealer overfilled the oil by 4 quarts, and that the customer provided proof, if an issue related to this occurs in the future, it will be covered by Toyota. The dealer also checked my bed bolts as I had requested, performed my state inspection for free, and said that they would wash the truck for me if I wanted to wait longer.

 

I guess that is a happy ending. Proving that any future problems are tied to the overfill will be difficult, but at least you have documents. Ask them to print this document and sign it... Put it in your files. Not that I don't trust them, but I don't trust them.

 

The document is printed, signed, and in my glove box.
