No brainer if you're that heavy. Do a ford 9". Endless options and aftermarket capability, relatively inexpensive, easy swap for those that have 4wd tacomas, and thanks to the world of NASCAR, gear ratios available in almost every 1% increments.

Hadn't considered a Ford 9". I'd like to do a free float rear and keep my stock brakes/abs/ebrake but I don't know if that's even possible. Might need to call some folks more knowledgeable than myself.

Can't have you cake and eat it too. ABS you won't save, but everything else you can. Your gen taco as the stupid speed sensors on the axle. With a 4x4, you can buy the RST speed sensor kit to run a speed sensor out of a 1st gen taco in the transfer case of your second gen and tie back to the speedo rather than the axle speed sensors. But you lose ABS.

Only way to do ABS is to use something like the Currie F9 semi float with FJ outers and disks to retain ABS/Speed sensors. But then you are back to semi-float.

Full float 9" is going to run you into a fabricated housing area which is not cheap. I got a quote form ECGS using a ruff stuff housing, chevy calipers/rotors, nodular case, f350 unit bearings (for full float), 35 spline chromoly shafts, and a detroit third for $3650.
My opinion, junk yard all day long! Can check for mid 70's through 86 F150. Those were semi float, big bearing, up to 31 spline and equal length axles and retains your 65" wms-wms. If you're stuck on full-float...find a used 14 bolt.

All that schooling and still can't use Google. :)

Free float, axle shafts splines into the carrier and bolt to the outside of the hub. Weight of the vehicle is fully supported by the housing, not the shafts. Also if you break a shaft you can still drive because the shaft is bolted in so it can't slide out and the hub will still turn. With front and rear locker on you're now a 3 wheel drive.

Most diffs use a c clip to hold the shaft into the carrier near the splines. Weight of the vehicle is supported by those shafts on the bearing. Break the axle shaft and it slides out of the diff with the wheel attached and your fucked.

That's the 5 cent crash course

Basically full float is the most ideal, the housing just has to be Beefy as fuck. 9" ford would be good for that right?

I don't believe a 9" ever came stock as a full floater on a retail vehicle. Only aftermarket housings. But yes, beefy housings and unit bearings.

Low and slow.. chopped up on 35s
Full float has a spindle with wheel bearings and your hub attaches to that, the shafts are bolted to the hub. Tacoma rear axles are semi float.. No c clips, the wheel bearing and hub are attached to the axle shaft and the shaft is bolted to the housing, you can pop a shaft and not worry about it walking out like a c clip

    Oops...No! Tacomas have a semi float @ChamYota

@SGTCap, FROR makes a full float conversion for first gen taco axles and t100/tundra axles if you want to make a full float on the cheap. But you'll still have an 8"

hmm. Well this is pretty intresting stuff. Although SAS isnt in the cards (a 4wd conversion will be) this is good stuff to know as far as the rear is concerned.
