So... someone school me here. Seriously... I don't know the answer.

If the UOAs on the noisy oil pumps are on par with other UOAs with similar mileage showing no excessive wear, and an oil pressure gauge hooked up for a cold start shows proper, steady pressure that drops appropriately upon warming up, is this actually a problem?

I've also done a ton of searches and can't find any cases of actual internal engine damage due to this.

Noise is usually never THE problem, but can be a symptom of an underlying problem and a warning signal.

Wow, just like dejavu. This is exactly why my 2013 was lemoned, I had the exact same noise. If you search out my user name you will find a rather lengthy identical story. You will continue to be amazed at exactly just how many of these trucks do this starting in 2013. Currently most are being told that this is normal and they are not fixing this problem. Many times it is being explained as piston slap. You will also notice that it usually only happens when it's under 50 degrees and it stops making the noise as it warms up. I'm not convinced that it's piston slap other than the fact that it quits doing it when it warms up. To me it sounds like gear whine, which is exactly what the oil pump is, 2 mating gears. If it is gear whine though, I'm not sure why it would quit when it warms up. Usually a gear whine is forever like a gear drive timing set or an old Mincie M22 transmission.

I can tell you from experience that the noise is coming from the lower drivers side of the block up front, right where the oil pump is. My oil pump was replaced, as were all of my serpentine idlers, with no change. They eventually put a short short block in mine and it got worse, that's when I lemoned it, that and when I realized that the AC didn't work anymore.

I think I was one of the early complainers is why they replaced my truck, I don't think going forward they will be replacing many. Even on my 2014, if you know what to listen for, you can slightly hear it.

My 2013 did it soon after picking it up from the dealer. We chased this problem for 3 months before I filed for lemon, it was in the shop 3 times and for a total of 35 days. To make matters worse we had 3 major snow storms that year, each of which my Tacoma was sitting in a nice warm dealers garage while I drove a compact little zoomer. After reaching an agreement on lemon, Toyota had some kind of a database crash and I couldn't pick up my new truck, eventhough it was sitting on the back lot of the dealership. Start to finish, 6 months in, I had a new 2014.

I just listened to this again...that sounds like a bearing in the lower end.

My 2013 has made that same noise at startup since I got it.

I have always been curious what would happen if I put some heavy oil in there (just to test... then drain)... Like a 15w-40
The reason I think that would be a good test is it could mask piston slap noise helping isolate what it is.

Once it is warm, the sound is 95% gone. If you pay very close attention you can still hear it a bit.

It is obviously internal to the engine, not fuel, emissions, exhaust, etc.

I have 50k on my 2013. Now that I just changed my plugs it seems to be running perfect again :)

Mine is the exact same as this. Interesting to note that I can't really hear it when the smog pump is going through its start up cycle, and the noise seems to ramp up once that is finished.

But this sounds way different than post 270 IMO. I had a car with a crankshaft bearing that went bad and this sounds like that. I'm no mechanic, though.

I'd live to try T6, but... you know...warranty.

My 15' sounds identical to this. Bugged the shit out of me for a while. Not really worried about it anymore.

My truck is at 20k miles. I bought it CPO @ 9k last summer, didn't notice the noise until the weather got colder @ around 16k. I have the extended 120k warranty so I'm not too worried, but I would like to get this documented and addressed. Not sure of the lemon law in Oregon...

My 2011 sounds exactly like this on cold start up and has since it was new. It goes away after warmup. I have heard it on numerous other Tacomas as well. Although, my 2007 does not do it. I bought both trucks new and have done all the oil/filter changes myself with full synthetic. My 2011 has 93k miles on her, still runs great and has never had a single issue. I don't think the whine noise is really a big deal or a real problem. I could be wrong though...

BTW Thanks for the video Iamraiderpower and wreck'em!

Nice to know you have higher mileage and everything seems ok. I still would love to know what it is.

I'm at 52,000 on my 2013 and I used to hear this. Haven't heard it in a while, and I'm not really too worried about it.

For those that are curious a heavy oil seemed to help. I run Rotella T6 for all kinds of reasons, not just because of this. YMMV, but I'm perfectly fine with taking the risk on a heavy but better lubricating oil.

Shell says that stuff is for diesel engines. What does that mean for a gasoline engine? I'm curious because I'd love to find something to quiet my Tacoma.
