    Greetings,

I've always been a full size truck guy and in addition have a 78 CJ5. I'm currently without a truck. Since I moved to Mississippi with the Air Force, I've been seeing a ton of Tacomas running around. Enough that I've really taken notice. The new ones are pretty sweet looking.

So my question to you all is "why would I buy one?" Why would I spend $30,000 on a mid size truck with a V6 and have a $500 a month payment? Why not just buy a full size? It really seems to be a no brainer. I can't wrap my mind around the justification. It seems like I'd be selling myself short and wasting my money and I could see myself having regrets. Heck my last truck was a Ford Supercrew with a 5.5ft bed and plenty of times I wished I had an 8ft'er

A little extra info. I currently do not have anything large to haul, although I've been know to spend plenty of money at the lumber and hardware store. As far as towing, I have a 16 ft Waco boat with a 25hp, so nothing ridiculous. Eventually I'd like to get a 7x16 enclosed trailer. I'm married with 3 kids. I like to hunt and fish. I have family in Pennsylvania and Georgia so can see myself taking trips.

It's pretty evident there is a huge following and market for them. I've never owned a Toyota, or anything other than "American Made" (I use that term loosely because I know a lot of Toyota stuff is manufactured here). I don't know the first thing about them.

So, gentlemen (and ladies), please, indulge me and convince me why I should buy one :)

    Pleasure to "meet" you
    -Brent

Brent welcome to TW. I'm near Oxford & I'm in aviation....

As far as a Tacoma, only buy one if it works for you & fits.

They are reliable and get around well...

Find a full size with Tacoma's resale value.

That swayed me. Plus I didn't need a full size. If I did I would have gotten one. Its your decision.

And no. I would not have gotten a tundra.

    that was a secret.

    anyhow

look around the forum, you can see none of these trucks are used for hauling anything but an atv or two and dirt bikes

rock crawling, covering land, exploring the back country, that is what people do in toyotas

big trucks are great for hauling, moving stuff, etc etc.

    what fits your lifestyle

    you decide

I'm just the opposite when it comes to deciding between full and mid size. I do not understand why someone would need such a large vehicle unless they were using it tow/haul heavy loads. The heaviest thing that I haul around is a dirt bike that only weighs about 210 lbs. The biggest thing I will probably ever tow is a uhaul trailer. So for me, the Tacoma is perfect. It does the job I need it to without it being so overly large like most of the full sized trucks you see these days.

The reason I bought a Tacoma to replace my Tundra (totaled), the Tacoma was all the truck I needed. I didn't need a full size truck to fulfill my needs. The Tacoma was the right sized tool for the job.

I bought a 15 TRD Sport and traded it 8 months later on a Ram 1500.

I didn't have a reason other than my payments are cheaper now and I always wanted a Ram with a Hemi. I really liked my Tacoma and miss it at times especially when parking. I still hang around here because I might get one in the future. I get the same MPG with my Ram as I got with my Tacoma. I kinda wish I would have waited for the 16s to come out and I might still have one.

Idk where I'm going with this but I suggest you really think about it and don't make a rash decision. I didn't shop around well and didn't get a great price on the Tacoma. + spending 35k on a midsize truck was hard when I could have got a nicer all around full size and I did.

Not trying to start a brand war, but my advice is buy once, cry once and get what you truly want.

Dunno. You are here. Must have thoughts. Your money. You plan to tow and off road? RAPTOR! You plan to grind through small trails? Yota.

You have a budget? Do as you must. Silly post anyway, you will buy as you want to. Like 35,000 folks on the internet will change your mind.

    OMG.

Exactly. Of course, I can't even wrap my brain around making payments on any depreciating item.

Sounds like an F150 would be perfect for you.

If it's on the internet it must be true. No such thing as a stupid question. I just don't know anything about Toyota Tacomas so figured this would be a good place to throw the question out there. You guys are the experts. In the end, yes, I'll do what's best for me.

Didn't mean any offense by the initial post by the way. I guess it does sound a little dickish. Just putting honest thoughts out there hoping for some good feedback...

Like yourself, I have never owned a Toyota. I searched for a truck in most brand, model and make, for months. My girlfriend is a big Toyota fan, so she swayed me to look at a Tacoma and test drive it. I had no intentions on looking at a Tacoma. I drove it and fell in love with it. I needed a truck to tow my camper (25' Travel trailer 5500lbs). Tow's it like a champ, no problem. Resale value is great, my truck is a 13 DCSB SR5 with 28k on it and KBB still has it listed for 26500. I will NEVER drive another truck. Have you thought about looking at a used Gen2, seems like every one is trading in there Gen2 for the new Gen3. It may be easier on the wallet, slightly, remember resale value on these trucks are high. Ultimately you only need to convince yourself, it's your money, your investment, your family...Good Luck

Don't let anyone dictate what you should buy. You're a military man, make a decision based on what you need, not what everyone else uses their truck for.
