Not looking for a performance gain, just sound..

I honestly don't need any real performance gain out of my Taco. What I'd like is to spend a little cash and make it sound angry. If all I'm really looking for is sound, how much will I get out of just replacing the factory muffler with a Flowmaster and putting an exhaust tip on? Anything else I could do past that to make it louder at a reasonable cost?

 

if you have a 2nd gen(05 and up), with the 4.0 v6....you can remove the 2 rear cats and install the muffler of your choice if all you are wanting is loudness.

 

Replace muffler and get a TRD CAI and take the air box cover off. It will be really loud

 

Yeah, shoulda mentioned that I have an '09 with the 4.0L V6. Of course, I want it to sound good, not just loud for the sake of loud, if that makes sense. I was looking at the CAI...it would be killer if I could get the sound I want without dropping another 400 bones though. I still gotta lift this thing and get new wheels and tires too.

 

what i posted, if you go that route, will have a decent deep growl to it.

 

So is there really no advantage sound-wise to a catback over just the replacement muffler? Also, is the FM 40 the one I want, or is say the Super 44 louder?

 

as much as catbacks cost...definitely not worth it to me....especially versus having the stock muffler cut out and a new one welded in. and yeah...the super 44 is definitely louder..sounds good tho.

 

I have a volant CAI and flowmaster 40 dumped, its a nice growl and sounds real nice when i open her up , savin up for DTLT headers and urd maf too

 

there's a huge resonator on the side of the intake on the 4.0L V6. Looks like a big box on the side of the inlet that doesn't connect to anything (can't get a pic of it at the moment, maybe over the weekend if needed).

If you can plug the hole that results in removing that thing, you can probably bring out some good intake noise without springing for the CAI, which gets its noisiness largely from losing that resonator from the works. Not sure if the resulting noise will sound good or bad, but it'll be louder. Just make sure you close the resonator hole with something or else you'll be sucking air out of the engine bay and you'll lose some power (might gain a little mpg in the trade, though).

I changed the muffler to a Borla with a 19 inch case. It is quiet at idle, but growls when you step on it. A larger tip will add some noise as well. I used an APC 4 inch stainless. This setup is quiet at highway speed, but then I'm past the loud as hell age too.

 

Can't say that I am quite yet..

 

Flowmaster 40 with turndown. And a cheap cai. AFE, or the URD arent to pricey.

 

I want to do the same like the OP.

If I go for flowmaster 40, do I need to get a CAI or stock will be fine? Is there a benefit in getting this exhaust other than sound?

 

U get a few extra ponies maybe, and a cool sound. U dont need a CAI but it will help when u get up to the higher rpms 3500+ plus the sound from the CAI makes the exhaust sound even better IMO

 

I did notice that my truck was struggling to go 70 Mph in a 5% grade climb. I might have to do this one at a time.

I live in Bryan so hit me up sometime & swing by & I'll take you for a ride. My flowmaster & Volant cai combo is pretty damn loud IMO.

 

^ yeah I think I heard someone say that they even netted a loss in HP with the flowmaster, but it's not like we could notice that amount anyways

 

Or you could just throw on some headers, muffler and an intake and then you will get the sound you want plus the little bit of power.

 

I did notice the lack of back pressure when the truck downshifts. The "engine brake feel" was gone. I have used Flowmaster, Edelbrock, and Borla. More Flowmaster than any. They sound great on big blocks, but I prefer Borla on smaller engines. You should go youtube as mentioned. I did the same thing before cutting off the stocker.
