Thinking about trading to a Tacoma

Hi guys,
I currently own a 2006 Civic LX with 85k miles. I'm thinking about trading my Civic for a 2004 Tacoma Prerunner with 155k miles. The truck doesn't have any issues other than faded paint on the roof that has caused some surface rust. In the past two years I have replaced the AC compressor, condenser, CV axles, brakes, tires, and motor and transmission mounts on my Civic. Based on that information alone, do you guys think it's a good or bad move to move onto the Tacoma?

This forum is pretty biased toward Tacomas so I think most here will say go for it. I got an '04 recently myself and I absolutely love it. It had much lower mileage though. But these trucks do last forever as long as the basic maintenance was done, but be sure to check the frame for rust! That was the first generation's (1995-2004) biggest issue, and it affected A LOT of Tacomas. If the frame is rotted or has any rust starting to eat through it, look for another one.

 

what engine, and cab style? Also what are you using it for. I always suggest going with 4x4 even if you only use it once a year. Its better than not having it. I opted to go 4x2 with the wife's thinking I'll be in Florida forever and blah blah blah, and regret it every time. How much is your civic going for online?

 

Need more info on the truck. 6? 4? auto or manual? Service records? (I'm assuming it's not a private purchase, since you say 'trade')

Money moving to or from you for the deal? Have you examined the frame, which are subject to rust out? (you don't say where you live)

If you want a already rusty 2wd truck, at 1.85x the miles and 1/2 the MPG, it's your call. May or may not be a good deal, based on the unanswered info above, and other factors.

My mistake. It is a 4x2, v6, crew cab, absolutely no frame rust. KBB currently has my car listed around $6500, but I think I could get between $7500-$8000 for it on Craigslist. I would be using the truck to go camping, haul my 50 CC scooter around, and move crap around the house. I'm about to buy a house and am a big DIY kinda guy. I did all of the work on the Civic other than the CV axles. I used to own a TJ and I took it offroad twice in the time that I owned it.

 

Buying a house is the same reason I got my first tacoma too. Definitely will need something better than the civic. I'm not a big fan of the truck you describe due to the smaller bed, and the 4x2, but thats a good deal and the extra cab space is good for kids. Most of those trucks in my area are on CL go for about 12k easy. Side thought, reg cabs go for a lot cheaper, you could just get a cheap one and use it for the dump and home depot runs.
