when i insert the end in a 1/2 socket extension into the square on the end of the filter cap and turn it the whole filter cap turns. i think only the round piece about the size of a silver dollar should be turning. tried to hold the filter cap while loosing it but still the whole assemble turns. do i just go ahead and undo it and let all the oil spill all over the place?

If you can't keep the filter casing from moving while you're trying to get the drain cap off, you may have to slowly remove the whole thing. It will make a small mess most likely, but I don't think you have an option. Once you get it off you can separate the two. I put anti-seize on the cap so it comes off easier after that. Had to do this with the wife's highlander, my IS350 and truck the first change.
