I changed my oil today for the first time. Just over 10,000 miles on the truck. This was my first time doing an oil change with a cartridge type filter. It took me about 1.5 hours but I was being very cautious. Overall it wasn't a nightmare, just different and involved. Removing the skid plate and using the special tool (purchased on Amazon) to get the filter housing loose was a pain. Changing the rubber o rings was easy.

I decided to use Mobil 1 0W-20 Extended Performance oil and Mobil 1 M1C-251 filter. I'm not sure if I'll end up changing brands or types in the future.

I did get an added bonus from the factory when I removed the skid plate though.

Probably drinking juice instead of checking the fluid levels.. just a guess! Oh and maybe there's another one back by the zirk fittings where they were supposed to be lubing the u-joints... just sayin.

Nice! Although I don't personally like mobil 1 oil, you got a good filter, not the made in Thailand POS OEM unit. Rock on.

    How did the oil look?
    Any shavings spotted in filter?
Any shavings missed and found in oil?

Oil was very dark. It needed to be changed pretty bad. No shavings in the filter. In fact I now remember it's still sitting out on my workbench. I could snap pics before I get rid of it.

Nothing in the oil either but I wasn't very thorough with it.

I got oil all over my hands. Overall I don't think it was too bad with the little spout thing that comes with the filter. Like I said it was my first time so I really was flying blind. I anticipate once I do it a few times I'll be able to go from start to finish in 30-45 minutes with a lot less mess.

I've heard other people recommend the drain tubes too. It's probably helpful but if you're careful its not needed.

10k is what the manual says I believe. I took it to the dealer for the 5k checkup and they said first change is 10k too.

I'll be changing mine every 7,500 from here on out though probably.

Are you asking if that is correct, yes, it is correct. Or are you asking as in OP actually waited until 10k for first oil change, because he is one of the few that trusted the maintenance schedule and didn't make a big deal out of going that long.
