okay i've notice when i start my truck as it gets colder and colder out side there is a whining noise. sounds like power steering. i went out and started it this morning and it was really bad(its really cold) but it usually only lasts for a couple seconds, this time it lasted for like 20 seconds. the fluid in the power steering reservoir is right and i don't know what else this could be. just very annoying to hear that every time i start it in the morning when its cold out side

    its a 2000 2.7L 4x4

    any ideas?

    thanks
    brett

The strap is probably worn or needs to be binded more

Yes I meant the belt, sorry my english isn't perfect. If I remember well my underhood, you have only 1 belt for everything. Verify if the noise comes from there.

okay. it did it for a second this morning but its defiantly not the tension on the belt. all belts are tight and its not a squeal like a belt either. just sounds like the fluid is so cold and its not moving right away in the pump or something.

also there's kind of a weird whistle or humming when i drive in 3rd gear at about 25 mph. but as soon as i speed up it goes away or change gears. it does it in other gears at different speeds to just dont know off hand what they are.

    any other ideas?

I just noticed this recently in my 07 as well. Mine only lasts as long as the key is turned over though. I haven't checked it out yet but it sounds like it's coming from the air intake side under the hood.

yours sounds more like the starter wind. mine is more of a whining instead of a wind, lol i know hard to explain on here with no actual sounds. but i know what your talking about. mine sounds like a power steering pump with low or no fluid in it, i check and everything is tight and full of fluid to the proper level.

    im stuck

yea and thats where the power steering pump it located. i noticed when i turn the wheel while its doing it it makes more noise then stops. it really sounds like its low on fluid but only for a second.

my 2010 does this too, and it only has 1500 miles. Not sure what it is, it only does this a literally a second or 2 but only when cold, and about 2-3 seconds after start up

The whining could quite possibly be the alternator charging at start up. I know at the shop that I work at we had a Buick come in with the same type of noise, and all it ended up being was the alternator...nothing wrong just charging. I'd leave it and see if it gets worse

I've had my '11 a week tomorrow and notice the slight whine. My father has the same issue in his '07. As the dealership would say "performing as designed".

Mine whines a little on a cold start with cold weather... but i think that "whine" is just the engine revving to about 1500 RPMs. I think the engine does this to pump up oil to the valves/valve springs and warm them up.

I have the exact same problem, whining noise when I give it gas though! I gotta 03 Tacoma TRD OffRoad, sounds just like power steering pump but like OP said fluids are fine. I whel it pretty hard and just decided to chalk it up to age and beatings. If you find anything out let me know!
