That was a busted air topout spring from my fork. I found a local guy with another busted fork that sold me the internals for $20. 6d9e10c04b6042dd39b4263c077645b9_e400b4913dc8813acee43c2872867fa1d65fe56d.jpg

I know this is a picture thread, but I'm hoping you guys could throw some advice my way. Do you guys think it's worth spending a couple hundred bucks to fix (and upgrade, I always buy better when I repair something) an old '94 Timberline, or would I be better off just buying a new one?

It Depends, if you like tearing old shit apart and making it new again... Absolutely. Also a good excuse to drink some brewskies. As far as buying brand new, I'd go the craigslist route 1st...There's always a plethora of people who decide to try out biking and then realize it's not for them and have some pretty nice bikes for a discounted price.

Might be tough "upgrading" a bike that old. IMO A new bike is in order. A newer used bike (if funds are low) is a great option. What kind of riding do you do and how often?

I was afraid of that, seems like a shame to toss a good frame.

I primarily ride to and from work, occasionally riding MTB trails when we can get out that way. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, my plan with the Timberline was to use a SRAM GX 11 set and a rigid fork. I need gears (there's a beast of a hill on my work commute) but I really like the thought of only having to worry about one derailleur (as much fun as adjusting the things are, I could do with only having to adjust one). The rigid fork was just because my experience with suspension forks is they're great until they wear out, then they become a royal pain to rebuild.

Expensive as f*ck. That's all I know....I would buy a Canyon Strive CF 9.0 Race or a Strive CF 8.0 for $5,965 / $5,315, a better spec in my opinion.

Just tossing around ideas here. $800 -$1000 budget. Live in San Antonio, so some elevation changes, but no down hill action.

Would it be wise to get a hard tail with upgraded parts or entry level full suspension?

Currently on a Giant Boulder that I got for free and rebuilt. Serves me well but the frame is too big for me (5' 10", and the bike is a 22" frame). I also want to upgrade to discs and a better drivetrain.

@Blze001 Today's forks have much better seals. That shouldn’t be as much of an issue anymore. Considering the riding you do (and if you’re taller than 5’7”) then I suggest a hardtail 29er with 120mm suspension fork and 1x11 setup. Hydrailic disc brakes, tubeless tires and only one derailleur means a hell of lot less shit to worry about.

Craigslist tends to have shit compared to cycling community sites like MTBR.com. EBay is good too if you know what you’re looking for. I’ve bought a $1200 hardtail and a $6000 all mountain bike off EBay. PM me if you want help finding a bike. I’ll find you the best deal for your needs and budget. Done it for clients and friends a bunch of times.

FYI - entry full suspension is $1500. $1G buys a very nice hardtail that'll ride way better than that Giant.
